The 'history' of CONTROVERSY Facebook Group.

I am constantly being asked about 'what happened' and there have been suggestions that may not reflect reality.

Since I started following this case I have saved EVERYTHING, including all the original messages to my inbox from Forums and Groups.

This gives me the opportunity to, once and for all, show what really happened.  This is of no consequence to many, and does not have the intention of fueling any negative comments. It is only the FACTS that  have been 'saved' so we can all move on.

I have no animosity to anyone and apologise if any have perceived me to have created any disruption. It was never intended.

Many of you know that I spent 4 years compiling the Remembering Madeleine Forum  http://forum2.aimoo.com/MadeleineMcCann.  I spent my time taking all the witness statements and compiling them into comparison timelines and timetable as well as taking specific topics to compare statement timelines.  This gave me the ability to retain the knowledge of what we were 'told' about the week and highlighted all the discrepancies between statements THROUGHOUT the week.

Like many others I became frustrated about the lack of media information on the case and in April 2011 I attempted my first video as an attempt to inform and give the opportunity to the UK public to view the files in a concise format. Each video is a compilation of all the details on specific topics in a 'one stop' format, as opposed to researching the information separately.

I wanted the UK to see the Police Files and the Dogs and currently have 188 videos, mostly compilations.

In November 2012 I was added to a facebook group and made admin It was called 'Focus on the Files' owned by 'LM'. (I don't like facebook for personal use but had a HiDeHo page used to distribute my videos).

Members were being added and the admin were asked for suggestions for a name for the group.  I suggested 'The CONTROVERSY of Madeleine McCann and on November 5th the name was changed to my suggestion by LM.

We were all looking to have the best group we could, focusing on the police files so I created and added a banner a few days later (similar to the current one) and made attempt to find ways around the facebook format to improve the look of the group with pinned post graphics etc.

Meanwhile members were being added and by January 1st we had a little over 300 members.

LM approached me and asked if I would 'take over' the group.  I refused.  Creating the videos took more time than I could handle and needed to have enough time to continue.  However, I was persuaded to take over the group but I had two requests.

If I was to take on the responsibility (repercussions)  of the group, then I would need to have the final 'say' in decisions.  I was willing to negotiate and  support all the admin in their decisions, even if I didn't always approve, and would support them regardless.

I also needed to delegate the day to day 'running' of the group, checking of libel and postings etc to other admin to give me time to continue with the videos (which proved to be pointless...my time never did allow lol)

On January 4th LM announced I was in charge of the group and would be making all the decisions. I was at that point responsible for how the group was run.

The admin at that point were Frances, Lesly, Petite, Debbie and LM.

I created the REFERENCE forum (of the same name) to enhance the ability of the group as Facebook format is very limiting and we could use it when FB was not sufficient.  It was very time consuming and to this day has not been updated to the best of its ability.

LM continued as admin until Feb 21st when, without any notice, suddenly deactivated her account.

The five of us continued to look after the group and the member numbers gradually increased with Frances promoting the group in the Philpot and April groups. An overwhelming amount of new members came from those groups and we were able to enlighten them on the 'Madeleine' case as they were unfamiliar with it.

It was very satisfying to see so many people finally realise the contents of the Portuguese Police investigation.

Two of the admin found the time too consuming, so by mid March three of us maintained the group with help from members alerting us to any problems. We had about 600 members at that time.

On March 13th my back suddenly 'went' and prevented me from walking.  I couldn't sit at the computer either so in the afternoon I found relief lying down.  Both the other admins were on personal matters so the group was not watched as it normally would be.

At 3 am I woke to see messages from members telling me about the 'gun' post and that it was all over Twitter.  I immediately copied the thread and deleted it but it was too late.  A couple of days later it was on the front page of the Express. 'Gun nut threatens Kate McCann.'  It was nothing of the sort.  It was a very silly thread about Kate running in the marathon and the comment in question was, as with all the other comments, a throw away remark.

I contacted Operation Grange detective and was able to supply him with a copy of the thread in question as they had only received the one comment out of context. Arrangements were made to contact the member and after a very short phone conversation it was recognised she was not a threat and that Kate McCann would be advised.

However, a few weeks later it appeared on the front page of the Star that 'Kate Feared for the Twins' ( because of the 'gun nut')!! The publicity did us no harm a far as group member numbers increasing.

Shortly after,  another two admins left and I was looking after the group alone, during April, with only the help of members alerting me and one who would text me if something needed to be attended to. Neighbour barbecues were often interrupted but thats what I had signed up for!.

Its difficult to find admin that are trustworthy, responsible and have the time to dedicate to the group. Its important to me that being admin does not interfere with their personal life. Facebook only has two levels...members or admins so trust is important as any admin can delete the group if they choose....or remove other admn.

I decided to contact Paul Rees and ask if he would help and he agreed, so Paul joined admin April 27th and became (amongst other duties)  the official welcome committee, wearing his tux at all times! Winking smile emoticon We continued to have the help of a member (with no admin capabilities.)

By June, the numbers were increasing and it was decided to add Frances, Heather and Zora as admin on June 18th.

Frances brought with her many members from the April groups and by the end of June we had 1600 members.

Kate's comments about 'forgiving' the 'abductor' created an enormous amount of activity on 'This Morning facebook and we admitted lots of members from links posted until we were around 2500.

About 6 weeks after I had added the new admins I sensed there were issues.  It is important for me to maintain the control of the group (for reasons explained) and always willing to compromise but I refuse to be heavy handed with banning without justification and it was put to me that one member had 50 'socks'.

Admin has always had the ability to ban obvious disruptors but I try to contact longer term members with an attempt to compromise. This was not 'good enough' in relation to the member that was claimed to be suspect, so I agreed to see if there was a way for me to confirm in some way whether this person was one person or 50 people.  I spent many hours trying to figure a way. It was suggested that I was 'hacking' but was merely right clicking on a page and checking 'source'. Hardly hacking lol!

Anyway...I discovered an acceptable means of doing it and related to Paul and Zora that I would be able to confirm one way or another if the person had all those socks.  It appears that they didn't want to know the truth and shortly after they removed themselves from admin chat and removed myself and Frances from the group.

Zora posted a new admin post and they immediately banned many members. With or without justification? Who knows?

Rather than give me the opportunity to identify the members, everyone was told they removed myself and Frances because they wanted to SAVE the group. (no comment)

It had previously been suggested to me that I should return CONTROVERSY to the original 'owner', and although I was involved in helping build the group from close to day 1, I was NOT the person that had clicked the buttons to create the group so I did not argue the point and decided to create a new group using the same name i had created which 'matched' the Reference group name.  I just added HiDeHo to identify who it belonged to, as my account had been deactivated and I could no longer use 'HiDeHo'

It was decided that I would continue to admin CONTROVERSY so I was keeping it as another reference/ back up forum as one never knows in the 'Madeleine' case what may happen.

As it turned out a couple of weeks later it came in very handy!

The morning Frances and  I were removed from Controversy I needed to get to work. Frances was devastated.  I was slightly shocked for a few seconds but knew that I had the other group ready and my first thought was it was a 'blip' and that I would be released of some responsibility and i could take some time off.  Being Admin is 365 days a year 'job', and all waking hours when not committed to personal matters.

However, I soon discovered that my time off was not going to happen. While at work I discovered there had been a temporary Holding Pen group set up to 'collect' members that had wanted to follow me over to the new group, which I hadnt even opened yet!

Thanks to Ray Ray and Frances I arrived home that evening to find that we had lots of members ready to join the new HiDeHo CONTROVERSY group.  I needed to get working on the crude graphics etc that were just temporary.

400 GREAT members joined that first day. I was overwhelmed!

Back to business!

For obvious reasons, I needed to be VERY careful about the admin I choose. We can all make mistakes and I certainly hold my hand up for one very recent trust in someone I mistakenly placed into admin, but for the most part they have all been really great.

I could NOT have done all this without Frances, who has been with me for the best part of this year... It saddens me that there continues to be efforts to try to discredit her but she has proven to be a VERY trustworthy, hard working, reliable and a great right hand man for me.  Lisa, Heather, Kay, Marie, Maeve and lets not forget Joy in her boots make each day a pleasure. We have a trust in each other that is hard to come by.  I am blessed.

We also have a member alert team of about 15 members that take the time when online to alert us to problems and help to keep the group running smoothly with the least disruption possible.

Many of you are aware that the ORIGINAL controversy group suffered a similar 'take over' to what I experienced and Paul and Zora were removed.

I do not take pleasure in seeing it happen but if it means that another group has been created to get the word out about Madeleine and the details in the Portuguese Police Files then it's not so terrible.

I haven't been banned from the current original CONTROVERSY group, so I have been accepted as a member there as I feel life is too short to be upset about the past and I see all groups and forums as 'us AND them' and not as many like to view it 'us OR them'.

I don't have time or energy in my life to focus on anger or retribution.

All I hope is that each of us can offer our own individual perspective on how we can achieve getting the truth out to those that have been prevented from seeing it in the media.

We ALL have the same focus... Its ALL ABOUT MADELEINE! Please don't ANYONE forget that!
