Hunt for Gerry’s missing tennis bag which ‘could have been used to carry Madeleine away’

25 December 2007 No Comment

By VANESSA ALLEN - Last updated at 19:03pm on 25th December 2007

Police want to trace a tennis bag allegedly taken from Kate and Gerry McCann’s apartment on the night Madeleine went missing, it was claimed yesterday.

Detectives think the blue holdall could have been used to carry Madeleine away, or even to transport her body.

It belonged to Mr McCann but has not been seen since the night of May 3, according to the Sky News documentary.

Tony Rogers, who reviews unsolved cases for British police and worked on the Soham investigation, said: “If it’s a bag of a size that could be used to take a child away from the flat, that would be of great interest to the investigating officer.”

But Mr McCann told friends yesterday that he did not take any tennis equipment to Praia da Luz, and did not own a blue tennis bag.

McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell flatly denied that Mr McCann had lost a bag during the family’s holiday.

He said: “As far as Kate and Gerry are concerned, there is no missing tennis bag. They came back from holiday with everything except of course, tragically, Madeleine.”

MadeleineMadeleine disappeared in Praia da Luz on May 3

Sky News stood by its story, which it said came from sources who had travelled to the resort after Madeleine’s disappearance Police want to trace a blue tennis bag allegedly taken from Kate and Gerry McCann’s apartment on the night Madeleine went missing.

At the time of the disappearance maritime police told fishermen and boat owners to watch out for anything unusual they spotted in the sea around the coast, including any black bin liners which could have been thrown into the water containing potentially vital evidence.

Portuguese police worked for several months on the theory that Madeleine died in her parents’ holiday apartment and that her body was somehow transported to a hiding place after her death, but have been unable to find sufficient evidence to prove such a claim.

Forensic samples which they hoped would prove her body was transported in her parents’ Renault Scenic, hired 25 days after she went missing, proved inconclusive.

Her parents have always denied any involvement in her disappearance and Mr Mitchell called the theory “ridiculous”.

From Interpol London:

REFERENCE: DNA LEAD RELATED TO THE MCCANN CASE

In the sequence of the message from IP SG indicated below and the telephone call of this date, we can confirm that we did not present the UK with DNA samples for comparison. It is is our opinion that these notices are pure speculation by the organs of mass media. Therefore, we would like to know if any bag was found of this type close to the Faro airport and if there is any connection to this case.

Regards. End.

You've got me confused I have linked to the airport video not a picture.
The reason I used this link is that it is a longer clip than used by most and it clearly shows Gerry and all his hand luggage. The sound seems better too but I didn't really want to draw attention to the fact that Madeleine's fall can be clearly heard.

But there is a question in this it's self who released the video and who chose to shorten it. for the public and who took it. Oh and why is it not upright?

Your right. I would say the person taking the video was David Payne, as on the bus it is Fiona Payne and her mother that act naturally when he films. So the video is released from David Paynes or Fionas mobile, who happen to be the only people reportedly that used some sort of baby sitting tool.
Dont worry about me I am just typing out loud

Gerry McCann and the blue tennis bag (updated with photos and video)

I've updated this article with further photos and a video of Eddie alerting to the wardrobe at the end of this article.

I heard some talk about Gerry McCann losing a blue bag, some said they definitely remember hearing this on the news while others said it was “forum gossip” and never existed. After searching the internet news and blogs for hours I came up with nothing and ended up concluding it’s probably “forum gossip.”

After finding nothing on the internet I forgot all about it, then the other day Ironside posted a link to a Youtube video from Sky News.....it's the report on Gerry’s missing bag.

So if the police were looking for a blue tennis bag then why did Mr Mitchell make a statement to deny its existence? And why was the internet scourged of any reference to it?

Ironside pointed out that Eddie alerted to cadaver at the corner of the McCann couple’s bedroom near the wardrobe ..... it's unlikely for a dead body to be laid openly beside or in the wardrobe but  a bag containing a dead body placed there ready for removal isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

Transcript of Sky news video

@ 0:22
Martin Brunt: "And detectives have been searching for a blue tennis bag that went missing from the McCanns holiday apartment. The bag belonged to Gerry McCann, he’d been playing tennis in the hours before his daughter vanished."

Man (I don’t know who the official looking man is): "There’s a bag of, of a size that could be taking away from the flat a child that would be of great interest to the investigating officer."

Another curious statement made by Martin Brunt immediately after the above (@ 0:45)

"We’ve established that the apartment is owned by someone called McCann, Ruth McCann, a retired teacher from Liverpool. She and Madeleine’s parents insist they are not related. The name is just a remarkable coincidence but it’s enough to add one more conspiracy theory to the thousands that continue to circulate."

That’s one hell of a coincidence! What's the odds on a couple by the name of McCann to rent a holiday apartment in a foreign country from someone also called McCann and yet not know each other? I understand David Payne supposedly arranged the holiday and if so then maybe it is just one hell of a coincidence.

@ 1:06 Martin Brunt goes onto say: "Eight months on many who’ve followed the story still cannot understand why Gerry and Kate McCann left Madeleine and the younger twins alone in the apartment as they dined with friends at the nearby Tapas bar."

(Martin Brunt sitting at the Tapas Bar)

"I’m sitting at the table where the McCanns and their friends were eating on the night that Madeleine disappeared. This place is shut now for the winter. The apartment is some distance away, it’s beyond the swimming pool, there’s a wall and a hedge and behind that is a path. It would be very difficult from here to see anybody going in and out of the apartment."

(Martine Brunt walking from the Tapas bar to the apartment)

"Going to check on the kids wasn’t easy."

(standing at the gate at the foot of the steps leading up to the apartment)

"Well, 80 paces as far as the gate, the distance between the Tapas bar and the apartment, not quite as Gerry McCann described it."

After viewing this video it’s hard to see how the McCann couple believed it's okay to leave the children and check every 20 minutes when they couldn’t even see the apartment clearly from where they sat..... stories such as the tragic accidental death of two year old Lucy Marke (who was at a BBQ with her parents) outlines how dangerous it is for young ones to be out of sight even for only a few minutes.

Conclusion: Doubtful they were checking at all.

In light of what Eddie and Keela appear to suggest in the video footage, I have to wonder why the McCann couple haven't attempted to sue Martin Grimes. Perhaps it's because dogs are unable to lie and leaves no loop holes for libel?

Gerry McCann's tennis bag 'is focus of inquiry'

Kate and Gerry McCann

Kate and Gerry McCann are facing their first Christmas without their four-year-old daughter Madeleine

The McCann family has denied claims that a tennis bag allegedly owned by Gerry is the focus of police investigating his daughter Madeleine's disappearance.

A Sky News report claims that officers have been unable to locate a blue hold-all which Mr McCann allegedly used to carry his sports kit hours before his daughter vanished.

<!-- BEFORE ACI -->

Tony Rogers, a former detective with experience with experience of high-profile murder cases, told the channel: "If it's a bag of a size that could be taking away from the flat a child, that would be of great interest to the investigating officer."

But Clarence Mitchell, the spokesman for Madeleine's parents, dismissed the report, insisting that Gerry had never owned such a bag.

"As far as Kate and Gerry are concerned, there is no missing tennis bag," he said.

"They came back from holiday with everything except of course, tragically, Madeleine."

Gerry and Kate McCann have consistently denied any wrongdoing in connection with their daughter's disappearance.

The Sky News investigation, to be broadcast this evening, also reveals that only one British sex offender with links to the Algarve remains a suspect in the hunt for Madeleine.

All 52 British sex offenders with links to the Portuguese holiday destination have been investigated and only one is understood to remain in the frame.

The documentary comes as Kate and Gerry McCann, both 39, of Rothley, Leics, face their first Christmas without their four-year-old daughter, who went missing in Praia da Luz on May 3.

In the broadcast, Prof David Barclay, a forensic expert, says it is unusual for children of Madeleine's age to be abducted by paedophiles.

Maddie's DNA 'Found On Clothes Dumped In Bag'

Skin And Hair Test After Bag Is Discovered

A BAG of clothes containing DNA which could be linked to Madeleine McCann has been found in a layby.

The white carrier bag, which was dumped near Faro airport in Portugal, contained a woman's jeans and a fleece which had hair and skin on them.

Forensic experts say the traces could have come from the missing girl.

Last night, parents Kate and Gerry were hopeful the discovery might lead to a breakthrough in the hunt for Madeleine.

A friend said: "Kate and Gerry are very encouraged by news of this development, which, on the face of it, seems to be extremely significant.

"It backs up what they have always said, which is that Madeleine was taken."

The bag was found by a member of the public a fortnight ago.

It had been dumped 75 miles from the holiday apartment in Praia da Luz where four-year-old Madeleine vanished.

It also contained a shower curtain, a flannel, a green child's T-shirt and a pencil case with a pink heart motif.

The clothes were sent to the Forensic Science Service lab in Birmingham for analysis.

It is believed the fleece and jeans contained a "moderate" DNA match to Madeleine.

A source said: "The DNA isn't an exact match to Maddie's but it does link.

"The blue fleece and jeans were found to contain traces of congealed skin and hair.

"It's the first clue found outside the apartment complex and could provide a trail."

News of the discovery came as the McCanns attended a church vigil to mark the six-month anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance.

Kate and Gerry were joined by 200 people at St Mary and St John church in their home village of Rothley, Leicestershire on Saturday night.

Yesterday, police were investigating a possible sighting of Madeleine at Barcelona airport.

A Portuguese teacher said she saw her there a few weeks after she disappeared.

Police insiders say the hunt for Madeleine will be wound up by Christmas.

A MISSING blue tennis bag could hold the key to Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, a TV documentary will claim tonight.

The bag ?big enough to carry a small child ?belonged to Maddie’s dad Gerry, the programme says.

It is claimed Portuguese cops have been hunting for the hold-all, which disappeared at the same time as the four-year-old girl.

The bag emerges as a potentially vital new clue in a Sky News investigation entitled The Madeleine McCann Mystery.

All smiles ... McCanns return from church with twins yesterday
Yet, bizarrely, the McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell yesterday denied it existed ?saying Gerry did not own such a bag and never had done.

Sky’s crime reporter Martin Brunt stood by the documentary’s claim last night.

Former detective Tony Rogers, one of Britain’s most experienced police officers, will be seen saying: “If it’s a bag of a size that could be taking away from the flat a child, that would be of great interest to the investigating officer.?

The development came as Gerry and wife Kate, both 39-year-old doctors, faced their first Christmas without Maddie, who vanished on May 3 in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz.

Yesterday, a pal of the McCanns demanded the “fundamentally flawed?case against them must be DROPPED immediately by Portuguese police.

The call came over fresh doubts about the validity of DNA tests.

It is thought the Maddie probe has involved the same process of so-called “low copy number?DNA testing used in the Omagh bombing case ?thrown out of court after a judge ruled it “potentially unreliable?

Tonight’s documentary also claims Portuguese detectives have failed to find and quiz a British paedophile with links to the Algarve.

He was among 52 British sex offenders with similar connections whose details were handed to Portuguese investigators by UK police as soon as Maddie went missing.

It is not known if he was the man who in September was at the centre of the hunt for the tot, after witnesses picked out him out from photos of 100 perverts.

Nor can he be definitely linked to another suspect ?the 32-year-old son of expat Brits who is said to have “groomed?and sexually assaulted a girl of 12 in the resort two years ago. That man is thought to be hiding somewhere in the UK.

Brunt told The Sun that a British source close to the Maddie probe said Portuguese cops had “worked very hard?to find the 52 and rule them out.

But he added: “There is still one man they are concerned about.?

The documentary quotes top forensics consultant Professor David Barclay. He said Portuguese police had “looked at?paedophiles in the Praia da Luz area. He added: “They didn’t check up on other people staying in the apartments.?

The new call for the McCanns to be cleared followed the storm over low copy number DNA testing ?a technique allowing results to be interpreted from samples containing just a few cells.

The pal said: “If the leaks from the police to the press are true that low copy number testing is involved, and it is under review, then we would demand the reliability of these tests is absolutely and totally pinned down before it is used in cases such as ours.

“It is ridiculous to form a case against someone using evidence that is fundamentally flawed.?

Gerry and Kate went to church near their home in Rothley, Leics, yesterday with their two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie.

KATE TELLS OF NIGHTMARE

<!-- font resizer -->
Kate McCann (PA)

THE SEARCH FOR MADELEINE DAY 129 KATE McCANN EXCLUSIVE

Shell-shocked Kate McCann has given a dramatic, impassioned interview to the Sunday Mirror to denounce claims that she killed her own daughter.

Breaking down in tears, distraught Kate said of the Portuguese police: "They want me to lie - I'm being framed.

"Police don't want a murder in Portugal and all the publicity about them not having paedophile laws here, so they're blaming us."

Kate was speaking on Friday morning - after her first police interrogation this week, but before police officially classed her a suspect in her daughter Madeleine's disappearance.

And she addressed head-on the extraordinary allegation that she accidentally killed Madeleine, then hid the body and engaged in a monumental cover-up to pretend she had been abducted.

Furious at the astounding claims, Kate, 39, said of the police: "They are basically saying, 'If you confess Madeleine had an accident, and that I panicked and hid the body in a bag for a month then got rid of it in a hire car, I'd get two or three years' suspended sentence.'

"I was even told, 'Think about it - Gerry would even be able to work again'. I was told that I could say I was stressed and I sedated Madeleine and it could be the best option for me. It is ridiculous. The worst nightmare".

Devout Catholic Kate revealed that the Portuguese police have even taken her Bible away - in the apparent belief that a crumpled page from it relating to a dead child indicates a guilty conscience.

Kate said: "One of the pieces of evidence is that a page from a passage in Samuel about having to tell a man his child is dead is crumpled - so I must have been reading it.

"I mean how ridiculous is that? My faith is sorely tested."

Under Portuguese law, she can say no more until her suspect status is lifted - making her interview with us her only and final comment on the mind-boggling police allegations.

Kate spoke to the Sunday Mirror as she was being hauled back in for her second quizzing on Friday morning.

Later on Friday, she was officially classed a suspect - as was her husband Gerry, in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The couple have dutifully never discussed the police investigation until now, in accordance with Portuguese law - but besieged Kate felt that she had no option but to speak out.

Police offered the "confession" deal through her lawyer before Friday's police interview. Breaking down in tears, the GP from Rothley, Leics, said defiantly: "They're telling my lawyer this could be the best option for me and I was advised that, if I deny it, I'm now at the point of no return. But I will never lie for them."

She said her desire not to give in to police pressure was fuelled by the McCanns' burning desire for Madeleine to be found. "And I think, 'Sod us, what about Madeleine? This would mean people stop looking for her'." She added: "We were under 24-hour constant scrutiny after Madeleine was taken. Where would I have hidden a body? We had no vehicle even then."

Meanwhile, the Sunday Mirror has learned that Kate and Gerry, a surgeon, have made a pact not to cry in front of Portuguese police - however upsetting the questions they face.

"They have promised each other that they will not let the police break them," a friend said. "No matter how intolerable the questioning, they will maintain their resolve."

The police case against Kate and Gerry revolves around claims that traces of Madeleine's DNA were found in a Renault Scenic car hired for the McCanns by a representative of holiday firm Mark Warner 25 days after their daughter's disappearance.

Kate said: "The police are going to say they have found bodily fluids from Madeleine in the car. It's impossible. We hired the car three-and-a-half weeks later."

In fact, when Kate was grilled for the second time, police repeatedly told her they had found blood in the Renault car but wouldn't say it was Madeleine's.

Sources close to the family say that, if Madeleine's DNA was in the car, it would be quite possible the traces got there from Madeleine's clothes and toys which the McCann twins Sean and Amelie had been playing with.

Her Dna would also be on her parents' clothes from where they cuddled and played with her. Kate said: "Five weeks ago, they took away all our clothes, items people had sent out for us."

A police dog sniffed out traces of corpses on Kate's clothes, it is said. "Apparently the dog started barking at my jeans and in the apartment," said Kate.

Friends have pointed out that GP Kate was present at several deaths before she went away on holiday.

"It was us who instigated and pushed for the searches," said exasperated Kate. "Would we have done that if we had something to hide? The British police have been great, they are totally behind us."

But she can no longer contain her fury at the Portuguese police's behaviour.

Kate fears the cost of the inquiry means police in Praia da Luz are anxious to get it over as soon as possible. "The Portuguese police are running out of budget for this investigation and want it to end," she said. "The British have been paying."

The McCanns' relations are at their side, but Kate fears for her 67-year-old dad Brian Healy, who suffers from Parkinson's. "This is so hard on them," she said.

So fearful are the McCanns that they are being framed they got a message through to Gordon Brown's office on Friday about the cruel twist of events.

It is believed a British consular official contacted police in Portugal to protest at the confession deal being put to Kate.

The McCanns have also asked if the American FBI could undertake a review of the case - but have been told it won't be possible.

Kate McCann gave this interview to The Sunday Mirror on Friday morning, hours before being made an arguida - official suspect - in the Madeleine inquiry.

THE BIBLE PASSAGE COPS SAY IS PROOF

The passage of the Holy Bible that fascinated Portuguese police came from The Old Testament. In Samuel, Book 2, Chapter 12, Verses 15-19, David's child is stricken with illness after he "scorns" the Lord.

David fasts for seven days, refusing to get up off the ground, to try and gain redemption - but eventually his child dies.

His servants have a dilemma as to whether to tell him as they are afraid that "he may do himself some harm". Eventually he guesses.

Police took Kate's Bible away because they said the page with the passage on was crumpled - evidence that she had been reading it.

In the sequence of the message from IP SG indicated below and the telephone call of this date. we can confirm that we did not present the UK with DNA samples for comparison. It is is our opinion that these notices are pure speculation by the organs of mass media. Therefore, we would like to know if any bag was found of this type close to the Faro airport and if there is any connection to this case.

Regards. End.

Description and Result of Inquiry

---On this day, the undersigned, accompanied by the PJ officers mentioned above, went to Ponta da Piedade, with the aim of recovering a black coloured bag that, in accordance with the information received, was unusual in that location and could be related to the facts currently under investigation;
This is a zone of ravines and caves, and is normally passed by tourists in boats;
At the site, with the help of an embarkation from the indicated ocean zone, and where the black bag could be seen, diligences were carried out that culminated in the localisation and collection of the bag;
The ravine where the bag was found, a rubbish bag, is in the Camara Municipal de Lagos (CML), and the bag contained another bag usually used for fertiliser as well as a rock ;
The ravine where this bag was found was littered with rubbish and fishing lines and cigarette buts indicating that it is a zone frequented by fishermen;
The ravine is located, in geographic terms, with the following coordinates, 3704750 North (N) and 840124 West (W);
Given that the fertiliser bag had dark stains on it, after being photographed, it was sent for analysis to the Technical Police/Crime Scene Unit, specialists Mrs. Joao Paulo and Viegas, whose preliminary exams were negative;
---The attached photographic report was carried out and follows:

Gerry McCann's tennis bag 'is focus of inquiry'

Kate and Gerry McCann

Kate and Gerry McCann are facing their first Christmas without their four-year-old daughter Madeleine

The McCann family has denied claims that a tennis bag allegedly owned by Gerry is the focus of police investigating his daughter Madeleine's disappearance.

A Sky News report claims that officers have been unable to locate a blue hold-all which Mr McCann allegedly used to carry his sports kit hours before his daughter vanished.
