1616th... According to the blog and available media information The MCanns went to Faro airport to drop off Jon Corner and collect more friends/family (which may or may not be the same trip) as well as a visit to Lagos Zoo.
Lagos Zoo isn't actually in Lagos. It's at Barao de Sao Joao, which is around 7 miles to the NW of Lagos and 4 miles North of Luz. It's actually closer to Luz than Lagos.
The first ping of the day comes at 08:54 at Faro Airport. Nothing before at Luz or elsewhere, meaning that he either switched his phone off (anytime since 20:15 the previous evening) or there was no activity. Going by previous days analysis, this type of behaviour is extremely unusual.

{ Then a 1 hour 43 minute gap } - What happened here?

1 August 1st... Morning trip to Faro airport. Soon after returning there is a large gap followed by a couple of pings in 'Lagos (Santa Maria)' and then 3 in Lagos, as follows (consecutive pings)...

There is also a late night Budens ping with possibility of travel because of large gap:

22:29 Budens
22:32 PdL
23:01 PdL Centro
1/8 Busy day. Starts with three activations in Luz (at what appears to be 3 different masts, Luz Centro 1 & 2 and Luz 2) between 09:14 and 09:30. Those are Kate’s only pings in Luz until 17:48
After the half nine morning ping she heads to Faro airport, where she activates at 10:33. Next ping comes at Porches (Just East of Portimao) at 11:40. Then comes several pings at Lagos between 12:39 and 17:36 (with a large gap : 14:07 - 16:35)
Back in Luz at 17:48 and another at 18:51.
Then a trip of around 10 miles West of Luz. Pinging Budens & Raposeira between 19:20 & 20:04 followed by a ping at Burgau @ 21:06 and then back in Luz Centro 2 at 22:14
1st - Although both G & K ping Lagos this afternoon, Kate is first there. She starts activating in Lagos at 12:39 while Gerry also has an activation at 12:39 (sending a text) in Praia da Luz. Although both travelled to F airport this morning, only Kate has no pings in Luz from that trip until 17:48 that evening. G, meanwhile, does have some Luz pings after returning from the airport, before travelling to Lagos.
Simultaneous period of inactivity; 14:07 - 16:35
Both take a trip to the West of Luz (Budens/Burgau/Raposeira) this evening. However, yet again, Kate is first of the mark...
She first pings Budens at 19:20 while Gerry has a 20:04 Luz ping. G only has one ping in the Budens area at 22:29 which comes after a 2.5 hour gap but has a Luz activation only 3 minutes later, so it may be an erroneous activation which would mean only K travelled West this evening. Kate meanwhile Pings Budens & Raposeira between 19:20 & 20:04 followed by a ping at Burgau @ 21:06 and then back in Luz Centro 2 at 22:14

2 2nd... Another Budens trip this evening. Ping at Luz Centro at 18:11 then Budens at 18:32 followed by an activation in Luz at 18:43. Then 5 more Budens pings between 19:16 and 19:18 followed by a ping back in PdL Centro at 20:37   2nd - Only Gerry has Budens pings this evening. Six in total
3 3rd... Two pings at 01:18 in the early hours and another at 03:18. Morning's activity starts at 06:45. Last ping of the morning comes at 07:22 in PdL Centro, which is then followed by a very large gap (trip to Huelva). The next ping back in Luz comes at 16:28. The only activation in those 9 hours comes at 13:38 in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, which is located right at the far Eastern end of the Algarve right next to the Spanish border. (No Spanish records available.) Given the time, this must have been on his way back. Last ping of the day at 20:34 (early night?)
3/8 Reported trip to Huelva in Spain. Records only account for activations within Portugal.
First activation of the day comes at 08:49 in ‘Assumadas 2’ (just North of Loule, around 10 miles N/NW of Faro). Then nothing until 13:45 in Tavira (just over 10 miles from the Spanish border). Pings then consistent with travel back to Luz, arriving at 14:38. However, then follows 5 pings at Lagos (Santa Maria) between 14:49 & 15:22 then back in Luz at 16:13.
Gap : 19:48 - 21:51
3rd - Only G has a few pings in the small hours of this morning (at 01:18 & 03:18). Both travel to Huelva. But where as Kate has several activations on the Portuguese side of the journey (Spanish records not available), Gerry only has one, being one at 13:38 at the Spanish border. Because of this, only K has pings in Lagos (Santa Maria) following a single ping back in Luz after returning from Huelva, but it may be a rogue activation.

4 4th... First ping of the day at 08:49 at the 'Sobral IC4' antenna. Then activations at Silves, Arge IC4, Ladeira do Vau and Chinicato. Back in Luz at 09:07 & 09:08 but then a gap until 10:58 at Luz Centro.

 7 7th... Early hour pings at 00:14 and 00:15

In Portimao between 15:00 & 17:15

8 8th... Early start (06:40). Last morning ping in Luz at 09:07 followed by a gap then pings Lagos Centro at 10:24 which is then followed by several activations at the antenna 'Lagos Hotel' from 10:30 until 11:22. Next at 11:56 is back in Luz Centro. Late afternoon trip to Portimao, pinging Lagos at 14:37 and Portimao between 15:03 and 17:14. Back in Luz at 17:48.
9 9th... 5 pings between 00:03 and 00:54. Next at 06:50. Pinging Chinicato (Just North of Lagos) several times between 14:01 and 16:51 (with one rogue Penina ping in the middle - no possibility of travel) followed by an activation in Lagos Centro at 17:00 and then a ping back in Luz Centro over an hour later, at 18:05.
9/8 Spent a couple of hours pinging the Odiaxere & Mexilhoeira area. 14:52 - 16:57. Includes a one hour gap between Odiaxere activations (15:57 - 16:57).
Then Lagos on way back to Luz.

10 10th August Gerry is in Lagos at 10:40 and back at Lagos Hotel at 10:54 then back in the Chinicato area between 11:19 and 12:54. Next ping back at Luz Central 13:33  10/8 Pinging Odiaxere & Mexilhoeira area again between 11:24 & 13:00 (includes an hour gap at the beginning, in Odiaxere).

Last ping of the day comes at 21:00.   13th - Only G travels to Faro this morning

  Other points noted

1) In Budens (just West of Luz), on the way back from Sagres (9th June), Kate & Gerry were on their mobiles at the same time...

16:28:56 Gerry receives a text (while in Budens)

16:28:59 Kate's mobile pings Budens2 (no details available)

16:29:22 Gerry receives a call from 044787xxx0398 for 2m 26s (in Budens)

16:32:14 Same number calls Gerry again, this time for 6m 31s (in Luz)

2) Why only one ping in Sagres for Gerry?
9th June...
Afternoon trip to Sagres, but only one activation there...
Couple of gaps as well...
Consecutive mast activations;
11:24 PdL Centro
{ 2.5 hour gap }
14:00 Sagres
{ 2.5 hour gap }
16:28 Budens
16:29 Budens
16:32 PdL
Kate had numerous.
If Gerry hadn't received that withheld call at 2pm there would be no proof his mobile ever travelled to Sagres.

3) The day before... 8th June...
Gerry has an early night... last ping 18:52
No early night for Kate though. Pinging up until 23:42. She actually has a ping for 01:25 later that night.

4) Weird little pattern in periods of inactivity timing;
25 June (Gerry) : 16:50 - 19:03
26 June (Kate) : 16:48 - 19:07
Almost identical to the minute.

5) Gerry pings Guia Zoo for a minimum of 5 hours on 21st July.

According to the records, they left PdL between 11:24 and 13:30 and arrived in Sagres between 11:54 and 14:00
The sparse activations only indicate that they left Sagres anytime between 14:00 and 16:00 and arrived in PdL anytime between 14:30 and 16:32
This is only based on the activations of Gerry's mobile.

15th...
Last activation of the day at 20:15

16th...
Last ping at the airport comes at 09:03
Next ping in Almancil (6 miles to the West of Faro - on way back) at 10:10
Then a ping at 10:21 in North Boliqueime (5 miles North East of Albufeira)
{ Then a 2 hour 15 minute gap }
Next ping back in Luz at 12:36
Next ping at 12:38 in Luz Centro
Next ping at 12:58 in Almadena (2 miles NW of Luz)
{ Then a 2 hour 16 minute gap } - It was around this time they were at the Zoo, according to reports, which means his phone was either switched off or there was no activity during this period. Almadena ping may be consistent with a trip from Luz to Barao de Sao Joao (where the Zoo is located).
Then two pings at Bensafrim Centro (4 miles North of Luz and 2 miles NE of the Zoo) at 15:14 and 15:30
{ Then a 1 hour 43 minute gap } - What happened here?
Next ping in Luz Centro at 17:13, then another ping a minute later. Then a gap until 18:39. Next ping at 19:19 followed by another gap until a ping at 20:44
Consecutive Ping List for today;
08:54 Faro Airport (1st activation of the day)
08:58 Faro Airport
09:00 Faro Airport
09:03 Faro Airport
10:10 Almansil

12:38 Praia da Luz Centro

17:13 Praia da Luz Centro
17:14 Praia da Luz Centro
18:39 Praia da Luz Centro
19:19 Praia da Luz Centro
20:44 Praia da Luz Centro

17th June... Only thing to mention is a gap between a 15:45 ping at the Luz Central mast and a 20:57 ping at the Luz mast. A gap of 5 hours and 12 minutes.

18th June... Only thing to mention about today is the large number of activations/pings, suggesting that the phone was used extensively throughout the day. Although they were all in Luz, with the exception of one in Lagos, it was a record number to date, extending over two pages.

19th June... First ping of the day comes at 08:20 in Faro Airport. Nothing anywhere before this. Last ping at Faro Airport comes at 09:01 before Gerry takes off for a trip to the UK

19th - Only Gerry's mobile tarvels to Faro airport in the morning, for a flight to the UK. Last ping from Gerry at 09:01 , However, Kate's mobile takes a trip to Albufeira, as far as I can tell, late afternoon/early evening.

23rd - Large simultaneous period of inactivity, around 16:12 - 20:11

24th - Large simultaneous periods of inactivity, around 14:51 - 16:56 and 18:07 - 19:20

25th - Large simultaneous period of inactivity, around 16:59 - 19:03

26th - Only Kate travelled to Faro airport this morning. Consecutive Gaps; Kate : 16:48 - 19:07 , Gerry : 19:59 - 20:01

29th - Only Gerry travelled to Faro airport this morning and also only his phone pinging in Portimao that evening. Upon Gerry's return to Luz, from Portimao, that evening, Kate's mobile begins a 2 hour 20 min interval in activations.

30th - Large overlapping period of inactivity, around : 17:02 - 20:25

July

1st - Simultaneous gap : 11:57 - 14:20. Only Gerry pings an evening trip to Faro.

2nd - Only Kate pings an evening trip to Vilamoura. Consecutive gaps - Gerry: 19.33 - 21:46, Kate: 21:22 - 23:16

15th - Simultaneous gap : 16:03 - 19:01

17th - Only Gerry had a single ping in Lagos this morning (possibility of travel)

18th - Only Kate travels to Raposeira/Burgau area this evening

19th - Only Gerry pinging in Lagos this morning. Only Gerry travels to Faro airport this evening

21st - Only Gerry pinging at Guia Zoo. G has a 1.5 hour gap until a ping back in Luz at 18:39. K begins a mobile silence at 18:32 until 20:33

22nd - Only Kate is in Lagos in the afternoon, with Gerry away to the States

26th - K travels to Faro to pick up G. Only Gerry pings Vilo do Bispo and Budens not long after returning from the aiport

27th - Only Gerry travels to Sagres in the evening

28th - Only Kate travels to Faro airport this morning

29th - Only Gerry travels to Faro airport this morning

31st - Only Gerry travels to Faro airport this morning

August

2nd - Only Gerry has Budens pings this evening. Six in total

4th - Only Gerry pings Silves and Chinicato this morning (probable airport trip)

6th - Only G travels to Portimao for most of this morning and early afternoon

13th - Only G travels to Faro this morning

14th - Only K has a single ping in Lagos this morning (travel possible)

19th - Only G has airport run this morning

22nd - Only G pings between Albufeira and Portimao this morning (probable airport run)

23rd - Only G travels to Faro airport late afternoon, for his flight to the UK

25th - Only K pinging Lagos this morning because G is still in the UK. G arrives back at Faro airport this evening from the UK. No K pings though

26th - Overlap in periods of mobile silence: 12:53 - 15:00

27th - Overlap in periods of mobile silence: 13:34 - 15:46

31st - Only Kate pinging Lagos this afternoon

September

1st - Overlap in mobile silences: 11:40 - 14:17

2nd - Another overlap: 18:45 - 20:10

4th - Only Kate activates the mast labelled "N/E". Error?

Consecutive mast activations;
11:24 PdL Centro
{ 2.5 hour gap }
14:00 Sagres
{ 2.5 hour gap }

4) Weird little pattern in periods of inactivity timing;
25 June (Gerry) : 16:50 - 19:03
26 June (Kate) : 16:48 - 19:07

Abductors could have spied on girl for days

By Richard Edwards and Fiona Govan in Praia da Luz
Last Updated: 2:10AM BST 12 May 2007

Police were last night investigating whether Madeleine McCann was watched by her abductors three days before she was snatched.

Detectives have discovered that the McCann family went to the town of Sagres, on the southern tip of the Algarve, on April 30.

A witness has told police that on the same day he saw a suspicious man following families and photographing children, including his daughter, a blonde girl "strikingly similar" to Madeleine.

A witness, Nuno Lorenco, said he saw a man following his family down the beach and taking "discreet" photographs. He said he challenged the man, who fled with a blonde woman in a Renault Clio.

Did Madeleine's abductor target her after family's visit to remote village?

Madeleine McCann and her family visited the same remote village where a suspected paedophile was chased away for photographing young girls, it has emerged.

It may have been the moment her abductor first laid eyes on the three-year-old, who was snatched from her bed three days later.

Madeleine McCann and her family visited the same remote village where a suspected paedophile was chased away for photographing young girls

The McCanns' day trip to pretty Sagres, 16 miles along the coast from Praia da Luz, coincided with reports of a balding man and a blonde woman taking sneaky pictures of youngsters.

The sinister couple have become prime suspects in the hunt for missing Madeleine.

A holidaymaker grew suspicious of them after the man began secretly snapping youngsters on the beach. When challenged, he fled in a car with the woman.

Officers have now officially ended the ground search for missing Madeleine and are concentrating on evidence from witnesses.

The McCanns are believed to have visited Sagres -which is on the country's southwest tip and effectively the "Land's End" of mainland Europe -on Monday, April 30.

A shopkeeper in the town said she remembered them well. She said: "On the road into the town, Kate was holding Madeleine's hand. On the other side of the road was Gerry with a baby buggy. "I remember thinking it odd to see him with a baby buggy because I thought the little girl was too old to need one." She said it was the same day as the stranger taking photographs, although other witnesses said that happened two days later.

Either way, it seems possible that Madeleine's abductor was watching the beach at Sagres for some time.

Holidaymaker Nuno Lourenco, who is from Sagres but now lives in Germany, was sitting at a cafe with his German wife and their two children when he noticed a man taking pictures of his four-year-old blonde daughter and other children. He became so concerned at his behaviour that he took his own picture of the man - who was balding with long hair at the back - on his mobile phone.

Questions: Who were these balding man (with long hair at the back) and a blonde woman taking sneaky pictures of youngsters?

He became so concerned at his behaviour that he took his own picture of the man - who was balding with long hair at the back - on his mobile phone.

The picture is believed to have inspired Portuguese detectives to produce their infamous "egg with hair" photofit of a suspect with a blank face and side-parted hair.

It was also reported that police have identified two people caught on CCTV at a local petrol station as being a couple renting a holiday apartment in the chocolate-box village of Burgau, four miles along the coast.

A blonde woman with shoulder-length hair and a man with middle-parted hair, both about 40, ate breakfast on their terrace of the Solimar

Apartments, according to the Portuguese press. However, the apartment block in question was deserted and neighbours said they knew nothing about it.

Other holidaymakers were also interviewed, with two men and a woman being taken away still in their swimsuits from the Mark Warner complex where Madeleine vanished on Thursday last week.

The reason for the urgency in not allowing them to get dressed was not clear, but they were not arrested and were being interviewed as witnesses rather than suspects.

Old Telegraph article from May 2007…

“Abductors could have spied on girl for days
By Richard Edwards and Fiona Govan in Praia da Luz
Last Updated: 2:26am BST 12/05/2007

“Detectives have discovered that the McCann family went to the town of Sagres, on the southern tip of the Algarve, on April 30.”

This is the place said to be 25km away, not far from the disused barn. What were they doing there?

“A witness has told police that on the same day he saw a suspicious man following families and photographing children, including his daughter, a blonde girl “strikingly similar” to Madeleine.”

“Detectives are working on the theory that the abductors may have seen Madeleine in Sagres and tracked her back to the family apartment in Praia da Luz, 18 miles away.”

The Telegraph does not know what theory the detectives were working on.

“A witness, Nuno Lorenco, said he saw a man following his family down the beach and taking “discreet” photographs. He said he challenged the man, who fled with a blonde woman in a Renault Clio.”

Is this the same witness mentioned above? If so, it’s a poorly written article for Witness A sees someone following “families” while Witness B sees someone following “his family”. I will assume B is the real thing, and A is the spin applied to make that “someone” seem like a PREDATOR.

So, who is Numo Lorenco, and why was someone taking pictures of his blonde daughter?

The presumption in this article is that the same guy taking pictures of Numo’s daughter also noticed Madeleine, and made her his target. But turn it all around, and it could be a member of Team McCann taking pictures of blonde girls. BTW, big question: WAS MADELEINE IN SAGRES WITH THEM ON APRIL 30? You would think so, since the suspicion is that she was photographed and targetted there.

But, alas, not a single photo of Madeleine in Sagres. Maybe she was already dead and buried at the disused barn, eh? Were the McCanns taking photos that could be used for some purpose or other, perhaps via photoshop alterations?

“Police have asked the McCanns for all the photographs from the trip to Sagres, and the rest of their holiday, looking for suspects in the background.”

Or maybe the police asked themselves the same question I just asked. Now, did the McCanns turn over any pictures to the police, or did they make up excuses for not having any?…

“In a statement on behalf of the family, he [Gerry] said yesterday: “We have now seen at first hand how hard the police are working in the search for Madeleine and their strong desire to find her.”

That’s nice, Gerry. Did you cooperate and turn over all your pictures?

“We are doing absolutely everything to assist the police with their investigation and we will leave no stone unturned in the search for our daughter, Madeleine.”

That’s nice, Gerry. Did you cooperate and turn over all your pictures?

“David Beckham, the Real Madrid footballer, made a television appeal yesterday… He said: “We need to do everything possible to help police.”"

The McCanns have not done what Beckham said needs to be done. I wonder how Beckham feels about that?

Now, then, where are the pictures of Madeleine in Sagres? Where is the FIRST picture of Madeleine taken at PDL? Why did the McCanns go to Sagres? To meet the owner of a disused barn? That was April 30!

Spent most of the day travelling getting back to Portugal late afternoon. It was great to be back with Kate and the kids after the short visit to Washington. It was also great to see so many pictures from the 50th day balloon launch on the website.

A lot of people have been asking what can they do to maintain the search for Madeleine. The advice we have had consistently from the beginning, and very much re-emphasised by the experience of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is to maintain a high profile for the missing child. This can be achieved by
relatively simple measures such as displaying posters in prominent public places. We ask people to continue downloading posters from the website and display them at bus stations, train stations and of course take them on holiday. Kate and I would like to thank everyone who desperately wants us to be reunited with Madeleine and have helped in this regard.

Quite a lot of e-mails and telephone calls today planning future events, which might be helpful to keep Madeleine in peoples minds. I am sure there will be a lot of interest in Saturday August 11th because that will mark 100 days if Madeleine is still missing.

This date coincides with the world pipe band championships being held in Glasgow. A former world pipe band champion, Alasdair Gillies who is a friend of one of my sisters, has composed a ‘Marvellous March for Madeleine’ that will be played by 100 pipers from all over the world. It should be quite a spectacle and hopefully it will be a celebration, and not a another marker that Madeleine is still missing.

I know I'm repeating myself but I can't stop myself from saying how much I love you, Madeleine. I'll say it as many times as I need to. You're so, so special. XXXX

n one occasion, I believe it was on July of 2007, I took Patricia to the supermarket. We carried bags in the boot (trunk) of the Renault Scenic; bought various items including fresh fish, shrimp and beef. When we unloaded the shopping bags, we noticed that blood has run out of the bottom of the plastic bag. After this shopping trip and still in the month of July 2007, I began to notice a strange odour in the car. I did not give it much importance and assumed it was likely due to the leakage from the rubbish bags or from the blood which had escaped from the shopping bags. As a result, we removed the carpet from the boot (trunk) in order to clean it. I tossed (beat) the boot carpet to remove any particles and cleaned it with a wet cloth and left it to air out.

Quote:

Goncalo Amaral Interview
The family tried to justify itself.

"...Later on, a brother-in-law and a cousin of Kate said that they had carried steaks in the trunk that had thawed, even garbage, but no. The dogs follow neither garbage smell nor non-human blood. Then there is a witness, that was never heard, a jurist that lived next to the couple, in the second house [villa] outside of the apartment, saying that the car trunk was left open during the night, for airing. But maybe that was because of the garbage…..."

Compiling the details from above...

We don't 'know' WHEN Madeleine's body was moved but we 'know' it WAS moved and according to Goncalo Amaral she had probably been held in a freezer and fluids leaked into the trunk of the car creating stains which would be difficult to clean, especially in the very hot weather.

Sometime in June and July (after they rented the car and when the dogs arrived) Madeleine was moved.

For most of the time, (with a couple of visits back to England) Sandy Cameron and Trish were staying with Gerry and Kate.

Sandy was driving the car and claims that 'STILL' in July, leading one to believe it was at the end of July, he bought some shopping and noticed blood leaking from the bag and, therefore, had to air the car out.

We know there was a neighbour (who was not interviewed officially) that saw the trunk left open all night for a period of time indicating there was probably an odour they were trying to get rid of.

This 'time' in my opinion is when they moved Madeleine's body (at least one of the times).

When comparing those details with their activities according to the 'pings' in late July, one had to wonder why there were some very 'odd' trips to the West of PdL.

Thursday July 26th Gerry visited Vila do Bispo (7 miles west of PdL) immediately upon returning from Washington (without stopping in PdL) spending 25 minutes around that area (extra to driving time)

Friday July 27th he visited Sagres in the evening (alone?)

Saturday, Kate went to Faro airport in the morning around 9am until 11.30 approx (according to pings) while Gerry claims 'they' took the children to the beach.

Between approx 11.30am until 2.00pm approx both their phones were turned off.

In Kates diary she claims to have had a dip in the jacuzzi with the twins at 4.20pm

At 4.25pm both Kates phone and Gerry's phone pings in PdL after Gerry switches on his phone.

They both went to Budens/Burgau by 5.30pm - 6.00pm, according to the pings, and were both back in PdL by Kate at 6.41pm, Gerry at 7.17pm.

Gerry's phone switched off approx 8.30pm - 10.30 pm.

Why did Kate claim, and was so sure their 'jacuzzi dip' was at 4.20pm, just before their phone pings (4.25pm) showed them leave PdL for Budens/Burgau?

Why did they 'suddenly' start visiting this area? (earlier on June 19th approx I believe).

Why did Gerry go straight to Budens after returning from Washington?

Why did Kate go to the airport when Gerry claims 'they' went to the beach and met a nice Portuguese couple?

Again...keep in mind this was all around the time the Scenic trunk was left open to 'air'.

Was this when Madeleine's body was moved?

In front of the pretty whitewashed chapel where prayers have been said all week, they gathered in a vigil for Madeleine McCann last night.

They wore or laid items of green plants, trinkets and T-shirts to create a symbol of hope that she will be found. But instead, as Madeleine should be waking for her fourth birthday in a Leicestershire village, the search for her is looking increasingly hopeless. There were new leads in the Portuguese newspapers yesterday, as there have been all week. A man who fled with a blonde woman after photographing young girls, a few days before Madeleine vanished, drove a car with British number plates. They might be the same "British" couple caught on CCTV at a petrol station at Lagos, near Praia da Luz, hours after the abduction. Another couple, possibly British, from the McCanns' holiday complex the Mark Warner Ocean Village were said to have been taken to a nearby police station, perhaps for an identity parade in front of Madeleine's parents.

But neither of the unconfirmed reports really stacks up. Would abductors really stop at the first petrol station just out of the resort? And would suspects stay at Ocean Village, under the noses of police?

So Portugal's Policia Judiciaria (PJ) is abandoning its ground searches for Madeleine and going right back to the beginning. They have reinterviewed Madeleine's parents in a major review of the evidence. But they seem as far away as ever from knowing who spirited Madeleine from her bed as her parents dined amid the whitewashed walls and bougainvillea at a tapas bar, on the other side of the swimming pool, nine days ago.

There is no telling how many clues have been under detectives' eyes all along but Stella Cash is certainly the kind of person who might have provided some. She was working at the Duke of Holland bar, 100 metres from the place where Kate McCann, Madeleine's mother, walked from the bar past the swimming pool, up her apartment's 10 stone steps and through the child gate to look in on her daughter at 10pm.

Several Mark Warner guests dined at Ms Cash's restaurant that night and she later drove home past the McCanns' corner apartment at 10.50pm but no police officer has questioned her about what she saw. "I don't think I saw anything suspicious but then I don't know what they might call 'suspicious'," she said. These are the individuals who form a vital part of an inquiry such as this, according to a serving detective chief superintendent who has put several child killers behind bars. "You start by clearing the ground around your feet," he said. "You need to know who has been in and out of every business near that scene."

Security was precisely what Kate and Gerry McCann, a GP and cardiac consultant, had in mind when they and three other couples with children, all from the medical fraternity, settled for the complex. It was their first holiday of this kind. They booked with a company that has a reputation for creating hermetically sealed, child-friendly English enclaves in the sun. The Ocean Club, set in the one-time sardine fishing village of Praia da Luz, is unlike other Mark Warner sites. It is set within the village and the McCanns' ground floor apartment backs on to a crossroads. Mark Warner makes a virtue of the fact. "You're as likely to meet a local as a tourist," reads the literature.

The McCanns' week was not the warmest but it had passed off well. There were tennis sessions on the two courts, where Madeleine stopped for a picture holding tennis balls, and a visit to nearby Sagres, where the family enjoyed a walk through the streets (Madeleine and her mother hand-in hand).

Mr and Mrs McCann seem to have dined at the tapas bar with their group most nights and this routine was probably a critical factor in their daughter's disappearance between 9.30pm on their penultimate evening in Praia, when her father looked in on her, and 10pm, when her mother found she had gone.

Amid all the rumours surrounding the case, it is hard to resist the assumption that the McCanns' evening routine was being observed and her abduction planned. The abductor forced up the louvre blinds on a rear bedroom window to gain entry to Madeleine's room. To have made that entry to a random apartment would have been risky in the extreme.

Once into the room, a quick escape not through the unlocked front door, in view of Madeleine's parents, but through the window, a short walk out of the drive to a car parked in the adjacent Ruo do Ramalhete was easy. The A22 motorway which cuts across the Algarve is 10 minutes away. At speed, the Spanish border is 90 minutes away. The border might have been sealed in time had the police been alarmed by the distress call from the Ocean Club. Instead, it took a desperate call to GMTV from a McCann family friend, Jill Renwick, to alert the British nation to the inaction.

The British media piled into Praia, so starting one of the defining aspects of this case: the confrontation between a British press corps accustomed to information and a Portuguese police inspector insistent that Portugal's segredo de justica law would prevent him revealing anything to the press or even to the McCanns.

By Tuesday, there were near scuffles at a chaotic press conference as Chief Inspector Olegarion Sousa was encircled by journalists pressing for details. The segredo law has been applied in the extreme, with no attempts by the police to involve the public in the search for Madeleine.

A telephone number for witnesses to call, published on a police website has still not been made public by Mr Sousa. Neither has an e-fit of the suspect, leaving reporters to seek out at least six e-fits which have been in circulation one of which, bizarrely, showed the shape of a suspect's head, with no face.

Mr Sousa waited until Thursday to issue a photograph of the pyjamas Madeleine was wearing, an image the McCanns had made public four days earlier at a press appeal they initiated.

The McCanns have now relocated, with three Leicestershire Police family liaison officers, to an apartment near the one from which Madeleine was snatched.

It is unclear whether they have been digesting the scraps of information reported by the Portuguese papers, watching Mr Sousa's chaotic appearances; or following TV reports about roadblocks from northern Portugal to the Spanish border.

On most days, there has been a statement, an appearance or a new image to ensure momentum is maintained. David Beckham was on board yesterday with a personal appeal. Later, a £1.5m reward was laid down.

But their deepening sense of horror has been palpable in their daily appearances to place their two-year-old twins, Sean and Amelie, in a creche, attend the local church or, as yesterday, to make the declarations of hope.

On Thursday, Mrs McCann was visibly distressed and needed to be supported into church by a friend for a service of hope for her daughter in which the first hymn "Father Hear the Prayer We Offer", offered more succour than a priest could. "Give to the winds thy fears, Hope and be undismayed ... God bears thy sighs, God shall lift up thy head."

Praia da Luz, a village whose population is made up of approximately 50 per cent British expatriates, shares their horror. Many holidaymakers continued an apparently random and futile search for Madeleine yesterday, despite the police decision to call it off. "We're parents. What more can we do?" said one woman. "How can you possibly holiday?" said Maggie Allen, 56, a nurse who arrived on Monday for a two-week holiday and has instead spent her days walking potholed tracks in her sandals.

The posters that locals have issued around bars and restaurants also reflect the random nature of the search when the public, and not police, take control. "Maddie McCann, white PJs, taken last night," reads one. Madeleine never answered to Maddie and her pyjama top was pink.

Does the decision to stop the ground search reflect a disastrous investigation? No, says David Hill, a former area commander of the National Crime Squad and now working for security firm Red 24. "There's nothing alarming about scaling it down," he said. "If they have done the search thoroughly, there's no point going over the same ground. You must scale that side of it down and concentrate your resources."

Professionals such as Mr Hill believe Madeleine was either abducted by a paedophile ring, taken by someone desperate for a child of their own, or by someone looking to sell a child for adoption. "Paedophile ring might sound dreadful but it doesn't necessarily mean something awful will have happened to her," he said. "By continued detective work, she can be reached."

The critical question one Portuguese police seem unlikely to answer is what scientificc evidence has been gathered from the McCanns' apartment. Forensic officers will have used tape to pick up fibres and will be seeking DNA deposits from the abductor's perspiration or saliva.

There might be fingerprints. It is likely that in a case of such high profile that forensic analysis will be complete by now and results checked against Interpol and Europol databases. "Officers should also be tracing and eliminating every Ocean Village resident from the past few weeks and eliminating them," said Mr Hill.

CCTV cameras are few and far between here one at the local supermarket, where one of many possible suspects was seen, is not functioning. But a theory that a British couple who were captured on camera may be under suspicion continued to gather momentum yesterday.

A man who said his daughter and other girls had been photographed by a man with a blonde woman in a Renault Clio with British plates at Sagres, near Praia, insists the same woman was caught on CCTV at a service station near Lagos. That would have been on the A22 to the Spanish border on the night of Madeleine's disappearance.

The couple, reportedly in their 40s, had been staying at an appartment in the Solimar apartments in Borgau, near Praia, where the petrol station CCTV images were being distributed.

After nine days, it doesn't seem much to go on, but Gerry McCann, shaking slightly as he read his statement, only has hope to hold on to. "We will leave no stone unturned in the search for our daughter," he said.

The words of the toddler's parents

"We have now seen at first hand how hard the police are working in the search for Madeleine and their strong desire to find her.

"We have also seen the resources being put into the investigation.

"We are doing absolutely everything to assist the police with their investigation and we will leave no stone unturned in the search for our daughter Madeleine.

"We are very grateful for all the effort and offers of support that we have had from home and around the world.

"We have been moved by the enormous willingness of people to do all they can to help find Madeleine.

"As we have said before, we are positive and focused on the investigation.

Thank you."

So what could have happened? Five possible explanations...

Paedophile ring

The most likely theory, according to experienced British detectives. Child protection campaigners allege Portugal's cultural complacency about paedophile crimes allows kidnappings to continue.

British couple, or sold to adoption

The second most likely theory, according to British officers, has gained currency in the past three days amid reports of a couple "of British appearance" fleeing after being spotted trying to photograph young blonde girls in Sagres. Local reports also suggest that police sniffer dogs followed a scent from the McCanns' apartment to a British couple's apartment at Ocean Village.

Family involvement

Dismissed as a possibility by Portuguese police. Ch Insp Sousa clarified on Thursday that the McCanns are not suspects. He said the couple had been asked to attend the police station simply to review their statements.

Mentally ill abductor

There have been several sightings of a lone woman outside the McCanns' apartment on the night of her disappearance. Former detective David Hill, however, thinks this theory improbable. "If there was a mentally ill woman out there, somebody would have told police," he said.

Madeleine wandered off

Portuguese police would not initially confirm that Madeleine had been abducted, giving rise to the theory that she walked off. It is understood that the door to her apartment was open. But she would have walked within view of her parents, and British detectives consider the theory unlikely.

Nine days of anguish

DATE GERRY USED
Day 37 - 11/06/2007
Kate and I had a slightly busier day on the media front than expected. We did a short press interview for the Irish Sunday papers, mainly to thank the Irish for their fantastic level of support. We followed that with one for the British Sundays which is likely to be the last one we do for a while. We talked about our pain of not having having Madeleine for such a long time and for our need to grieve, which occurs mainly in private. We also talked about how after Morocco we will have to spend some time reflecting both emotionally, and also how best the campaign can be taken forward. What we want to ensure is that the campaign has a psoitive effect on finding Madeleine.

After this we headed down to Sagres which is the very most southwestern tip of Portugal. There is a very nice beach and we had lunch with the family.

After returning from the beach we did the Irish version of Crimewatch-‘Crimecall’. There are a lot of Irish tourists in and around Praia da Luz and although the awareness of Madeleine’s disappearance in Ireland is extremely high, we want to ensure that everyone is aware of the appeal and we want the Irish public to come forward with photographs of people who they do not know who were in and around Praia da Luz in the 2 weeks leading up to the 3rd May. The address to upload photographs is: to <!-- m -->http://www.madeleine.ceopupload.com<!-- m --> . We have also asked for people to contact their local police if they have seen a man matching the description of the suspect carrying a child seen around the time of Madeleine’s abduction. He is 30-40 years, 1.70-1.80m (5’7”-11”), caucasian and was wearing a dark jacket, beige or mustard coloured trousers with dark shoes. No major news on the investigation front- we still believe it is just a single phone call away.

Subject : Madeleine Cainn (sic) – Observation – IMPORTANT & URGENT

Dir (sic) Sir or Madame,

We are writing to you with respect to the aforementioned case.

Please let me introduce myself. I am the owner/manager of Quinta do Martinhal (website) a large hotel resort development in Sagres.

Today we hosted a birthday party at Jardin das Dunas, a private children and pool club at Lagos. At the end of the event I got involved in a conversation with Caroline Kish, a British national in her early 30s when we both watched the news on TV while drinking a coffee at the bar.

After a few minutes of talking to her, I realised that she has made an observation with respect to the Madeleine case that she needs to reported (sic) to PJ asap.

Carolyn Kish told me the following:

- she saw Mr McCann at the avenida of Lagos when she tried to withdrew (sic) money from the cash machine next to the Banif outlet.
- Mr McCann looked very upset and said a few time the following “Don’t hurt Madeleine”.
- Carolyn felt this was a very bizar (sic) situation but thought this men (sic) must be an actor or a journalist as he repeted (sic) again and again this sentence.
- Carolyn then walked to the Banco Espiritu Santo outlet a few 100 meters. Carolyn is a customer of BES for many, many years and the staff know her well at the bank.
- The bank staff asked that they whether she heard the latest (sic). The bank staff told her about Madeleine going missing and Carolyn immediately made the connection to the man she saw in front of the cash machine. She told the bank staff that she must have seen Mr McCann just a few minutes ago. Pictures of Mr McCann on TV confirmed this later.
- I understand that Carolyn did not report the above observation till today as she did not think that it makes sense to report an observation on the parents of Madeleine. However, latest development of the case seem to go in another direction.

Please contact me on ******* if you feel the aforementioned information needs to be followed up. I promised Carolyn to be with her if you decide to meet her. Carolyn does not speak Portuguese and seem to be a little scared of the police (as many people are).

I would be most grateful if you could confirm receipt of this email.
Thanking you

Truth of Lie book summary
SATURDAY, 5 MAY (day 2)
- an apartment for the police is filled with officer napping on couches, on the floor, shared beds.
- in Luz, statements are still being collected from employees, nannies, residents and tourists
- in Sagres, a tourist was taking fotos of children, including a blond, blue-eyed 4yo whose father snapped a foto of this man, who tried to grab her, as well as his car. the father wore dark glasses but said the "fotographer" was not dressed like a tourist, had dark brown hair covering his neck, creme trousers, classic shoes, out of place on the beach... we are reminded of Jane's statement.

OUTROS APENSOS (file 13) cell phone analysis report
Activations of the mobile phone (44)778698#### User/owner: Gerald PATRICK MCCANN.

JULY 2007 (Report pages 19 to 23)

After this return, Gerald's phone comes to activate antennae of Lagos at 11:28:35, 11:38:29 and 11:46:24 on 19th. Ending up by returning to antenna "Praia da Luz" at 11:49:28.

On this day it leaves this time in the direction of Sagres, activating on the way the antenna "Budens" at 16:58:18 and 16:58:22. At 17:24:08 one sees the record on antenna "Sagres". It returns to Praia da Luz where, at 17:27:21, it receives a signal from the antenna called "Praia da Luz Centre".

It should be noted that these two records deserve very close attention. The time interval of 3 minutes would mean that Gerald would be obliged to travel the 27,5 Km that separate Sagres and Luz at a speed exceeding 250 km/h. Given the time of day and time of year, we can assume that there was some traffic on the road, which would preclude such speeds. Against this background, there would appear to have been, perhaps, errors in the records submitted by Vodafone.

After that return to the village of Luz, a new record comes up on the antenna "Budens" at 18:18:57, but given the difference between this record and the previous record (18:17:28 - "Praia da Luz Centre") of barely 1 minute and 29 seconds, it cannot be viable to travel about 10.5 km in that period of time. To do so one would have to travel at a speed of 420 km/h. There is still an hypothesis of being at the extreme edge of the coverage area of the antennae? and to get from one to the other during that period of time.

On 27th [the phone] leaves in the direction of Sagres. On the way to this town a contact is registered at 17:48:50 with the antenna "Budens". In the locality, supposedly the destination, it activated the antenna with that name [Sagres] at 18:47:32. According to the records it comes back to the village of Luz, the first antenna being activated is "Praia da Luz Centre" at 20:42:25.

All other records until 17:36:19 on 28th are made on that antenna. At this time the antenna activated is called "Budens" at 17:36:19 and 17:37:22, the registration immediately after which at 19:17:55 was made on antenna "Praia da Luz Centre".

JUNE 2007
On 19th, the records of the mobile phone of Kate again indicate a journey to a
locality that is in the coverage area of the repeater "Raposeira 1" (17:21:12).
At 17:24:08 the mobile phone of Gerald activates the antenna called "Sagres".
From this one infers that the two were together in that area of the Algarve.
Until arriving at that place the mobile phone of Kate presents records at
16:58:18 and 16:58:22 on the antenna "Budens".
The return to Luz will have occurred about 17:20 - 17:40: at 17:41:24 occurs the
first record on the antenna "Luz Centro 2", from the mobile phone of Kate, while
the record from the mobile phone of Gerald, in this return to Luz, occurs at
17:27:21.
From the return until 22nd there exist no records outside of the antennae of
Luz.

9 June - Drive to Sagres.

Extract Gerry's Blog for 9 June

...................After this we headed down to Sagres which is the very most southwestern tip of Portugal. There is a very nice beach and we had lunch with the family.

Sorry to get a bit paranoid about Sagres.

This was reported in a lot of papers but never ever mentioned by anyone in the rogatorys or other statements:

Detectives have discovered that the McCann family went to the town of Sagres, on the southern tip of the Algarve, on April 30.

Jeanne ... I too am a bit paranoid about Sagres. It features a bit too much IMO. See a previous post of mine http://themaddiecasefiles.com/post28797.html#p28797

.... they made another trip to Sagres on 9th June, just after GM's return from Amsterdam and just before the letter/map was received by De Telegraaf.

Quote:
The Telegraph got a letter and ticket with this indication that Madeleine McCann lies under branches and/or stones, at a distance of fifteen kilometres of the apartment where she disappeared. The Telegraph has not chosen consciously to publicise the letter and the exact location so as not to disturb the investigation. Immediately after receipt the letter was delivered to Amsterdam police force. Wednesday the kleurenscan (photocopies?) were forwarded to Portugal. According to spokesman Gerard Vrooland even lasted " because securing biological tracks is a time-consuming procedure".

10th June was the day of the "suspicious phone call" said to have occurred between GM and ROB:

Quote:
The call that most intrigued the Portuguese police took place on June 10th between Russell O'Brien and Gerry McCann. The father of Maddie assured initially to the police that the call had been made from a location four kilometres from the Ocean Club. However, listening to the calls and triangulating antennas enabled the Portuguese police; in collaboration with British technicians verify that such claims were false.

The place from where the call was made and the content of the conversation is the missing evidence and the police want to explore that in interrogations, which could lead to the speedy location of the body of Madeleine.

The triangulation of calls has enabled the police to discover an abandoned barn, where they found a towel stained with blood and remains from the trunk of Renault Scénic rented by McCann.

What is true? What could be relevant? What can be discounted?

Every little piece needs to be thought about in conjunction with the rest, nothing discarded.

Why did GM hurry on to the Vila do Bispo area after a long journey from the States?
What is there - a posh hotel, perhaps, such as BK might have been staying in? What area does the antenna at V do B cover? Does it go as far as Burgau?

ETA: answering my own question - the posh hotel (Martinhal) is at Sagres. Sagres would, I think, be covered by the antenna known as Vila do Bispo. Burgau wouldn't. But the hotel idea is just a hunch. Perhaps Gerry went to look at something else entirely.
