Sousa stated that at the end of the investigation the case file would be handed to the public prosecutor. The papers were given to the local prosecutor, José Cunha de Magalhães e Meneses, on 11 September. Meneses decided that there was sufficient evidence to pass the case to a judge, who had the power to approve any charges and also decide, within 10 days, on other actions that could have included placing the McCanns under house arrest in the Algarve, ordering further interrogations and authorising further searches. The judge appointed was Pedro Miguel dos Anjos Frias, Portimão's 'juiz de instrução criminal'

In addition to Meneses, a district prosecutor, Luis Bilro Verão, was appointed on 11 September 2007 to oversee the investigation

McCanns Mark The Six Month Anniversary

Let her go: Kate McCann's desperate plea six months after Madeleine's disappearance

Last updated at 13:36 03 November 2007

<!-- google_ad_section_start(name=s2) -->

Kate McCann has issued a moving new appeal for the return of her missing daughter six months after Madeleine went missing from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in the Algarve.

Releasing a new picture of Madeleine playing innocently on a slide near her home in Rothley, Leicestershire, heartbroken Mrs McCann pleaded for an abductor to let her "beautiful little person" go.

In a heart-rending message, she said: "Six months is such a long time for a little girl to be separated from her family."

"Madeleine is a beautiful little person who deserves a loving and happy life."

The McCanns will tonight attend a special vigil at the Anglican church of St Mary and St John in Rothley, where they will be joined by family and friends to say special prayers for Madeleine.

The four-hour vigil will start at 6pm, with lead prayers between 9.30pm and 9.45pm - the period in which Madeleine vanished from the family's holiday apartment while her parents were at a tapas bar on May 3.

The six month appeal came as Kate and Gerry faced shocking new claims that forensic tests had proved their daughter's body had been in their hire car.

Test results found traces of Madeleine's DNA in the couple's Renault Scenic, which was rented 25 days after the girl went missing, it was alleged.

Analysis was understood to have shown that bodily fluids found in the silver Renault came from a body, and not from a live person, the London Evening Standard reported.

Sources claimed the material showed the car must have been used to move Madeleine's body, and said the quantity found was too great for it to have been transferred from her toys or clothing as they were transported in the car

QUOTE“We held a meeting on 13 November, with Inspectors Paulo Ferreira and Ricardo Paiva present, with Brian Kennedy, Director of the detective agency, Francisco Marco and one of his advisers, plus Antonio Jimenez, ex-chief of the Kidnapping Unit of Catalan [Note: Other information suggests that Edward Smethurst was also present]. Brian Kennedy insisted that his motives were purely charitable, aimed at finding the truth, and generally helping missing children. He said he was interested in discovering the truth even if the McCann family, the friends, or any other person is found to be involved in the disappearance”.UNQUOTE

This evening meeting was either on the same day, or very close to, the meeting that Brian Kennedy had with the Portuguese Police on 13 November 2007 that we referred to above. The two Portuguese Police Inspectors, Ferreira and Paiva, later submitted an account of their strange meeting with Brian Kennedy.
