Nothing to do with Madeleine, but I thought this was funny (and also says a little bit about the strange relationships between communities and churches in PDL):
"The church is all in English (in fact we have a mandate which ensures we do not proselytise the Portuguese – not that they have much to worry about from me!)."
This is another interesting case. Another British couple accused of abandonment. I do seriously hope the Portuguese or anyone else does not think this behaviour is typical. I am horrified that someone would leave a tiny baby.

I am sure I read that the poor child eventually had successful surgery for the cleft palete and was adopted by a Portuguese couple.

While looking for the story of this baby (that was indeed adopted by a Portuguese couple after having been successfully operated, I came across a little thing by Fr hubbard and got the links mixed up.
Don't worry, abandoning babies is not a specifically British bad habit. Here is Portuguese case (I think in both cases the authorities decided that the mothers needed more help than punishment):
I just saw there another headline of a small girl "abducted" from her father from Whales and found sound and safe in Algarve. Fortunately, that's the majority of the cases.

Does the mention of his baby mean that Father Haynes Hubbard and his wife have had a new baby?
Haynes Hubbard (BA ’87) and his wife Susan (White) (BA ’90, ** ’91) were joined by Reverend Mark Andrews (BA ’87) and the Reverend Janet Read (BA ’90) as godparents, for the baptism of Gabriella Hubbard in June 1999. Gabriella is a little sister for Sebastien, 2. Susan is in her second year of a seven-year midwifery program at Ryerson University in Toronto

Yes, i think your right, i remember reading about it.
Yes, Haynes Hubbard and his wife must have had a new arrival.
The couple’s two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie would often spend time at the Hubbard’s villa playing with his two children. He described the allegations against the McCanns as absurd and said the police would be better off looking for Madeleine.
I was out there talking to them and to family and friends. I was at the home of the Anglican vicar Haynes Hubbard, sitting with him and his wife, Susan, while their own three children pottered around us
Pear, thank you for posting this interesting story -- both of them! I am always grateful to all the Portuguese posters who keep us informed about all sorts of little details of which we would otherwise be unaware. In addition, I have nothing but the greatest of admiration for the courage that all of you show by posting in a language other than your first.
Actually, I'm getting to the conclusion that the PortugalResident is a pretty interesting newspaper. It surely beats the i diots of the Telegraph, that think that Huelva is in Portugal.
