I continue to believe that the comments about McCanns missing at breakfst and lunch throughout the week is one more example that can possibly explained if something happened to Madeleine earlier in the week.

These are the breakfast  'quotes' so we can get a better idea of who said what and when.  Did May 4th interviews differ from May 10th and subsequently the Rogatories.

Why were so many of T7 concerned about the details of Gerry and Kate's habits for breakfast and lunch?  They all seemed, at a very early time, to find it necessary to let us know they did not spend a lot of time with the McCanns (and Madeleine) and that they had breakfast and lunch alone.

Why would that be?

A child had just been 'abducted'. 'Everything' happened on Thursday night..

What did Gerry and Kate's breakfast habits have to do with the 'abduction'?

Even if it DID become more of an issue later, why the importance of telling the police the following morning...May 4th?

My opinion is it was part of the set up and gave the T7 an 'out' when asked about Madeleine.  It gave them the opportunity of 'seeing' Madeleine randomly where they could 'think' they saw her and not have to be exact.

It all 'fits' (easily imo) with something happening earlier.

The reasoning behind not going to breakfast was because they didn't have a buggy.

Apparently, they took the twins in a buggy to the beach on Tuesday (which may have been Monday as Stephen Carpenter saw them)

Gerry McCann
Concerning the routine, on Tuesday there was a slight change given that after lunch, at 13h30, the deponent and KATE decided to take the three children to Praia da Luz, having gone on foot, taking only the twins in baby buggies. They all left by the main door because of the buggies, went around to the right, down the street of the “BATISTA” supermarket and went to the beach along a road directly ahead.

Stephen Carpenter
DCF: On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, it says here that you got on well, that he communicated easily, he was fun, he talked to you about golf which was his favourite sport, that he wanted to improve his tennis during the week. On Sunday or Monday he twisted his ankle, but managed to keep on playing, and on Sunday morning he only played tennis with Kate, that you saw them both playing sport and they passed by you to the bar on the beach and this was Sunday or Monday at about mid day.

SC: Mmm, mmm.
Gerry
On the next day (SUNDAY), the children awoke at 8.00am, and Gerry and his wife around 7.30am. They got dressed, and around 8.40am, left the apartment in the direction of the Millennium restaurant, again on foot and in the same direction taken the previous night. They arrived around 8.45/9.00am. The group did not all arrive at the same time, but in phases, and for this reason, they were not all seated at the same table.

He believes that Matthew and his wife Rachael, did not have breakfast, as they were ill the night prior with vomiting and diarrhoea. At breakfast, the children sat as before, between the adults and they finished around 9.25am.

Gerry, his wife Kate, and their three children, returned to the Ocean Club by the same route, where they arrived at 9.40am, and Gerry entered his apartment through the main door, which was locked with the key, and took out a bag of clothing and cream for the children and then headed for the interior of the complex. The twins stayed in the crèche next to the Tapas, which is for children from one to two years of age, and after that, Gerry and his wife would take Madeleine to the other crèche, for older children, which is located on the first floor of the principal reception of the establishment, where they arrived at 9.50am.
Gerry May 4
Concerning routines, he mentions that on Sunday, they had breakfast, between 7.30 and 8.30am at the Ocean Club, namely in the resort’s bar a few metres away from the apartment. On the following days, because the war was rather distant, they started buying food at the supermarket, located on the same road as the apartment, whose name he cannot recall.

Kate May 4
As far as the routines are concerned, the witness refers that on Sunday they went for breakfast at around 7.30/8.30 at the Ocean Club, namely at the resort’s bar which is located at some metres’ distance from the apartment. On the following days, and because the bar was quite far away, they started buying food at the “BATISTA” supermarket, which is located on the same road as the apartment, and they had their first meal of the day at the apartment.

Jane Tanner May 4

Since Saturday, the habit has been to get up around 7.30/8am, then to have breakfast in a restaurant near the apartment, called the, "Millennium," (6) towards 9am, to drive the children to the, "Kids Club." (2)(4)(5), according to the ages of the children. Only Gerry and Kate have breakfast in their apartment due to the fact that they have three children and it is complicated walking with the three at the same time. Then, they too drive their children to the, "Kids Club."

David Payne MAY 4
Concerning the days spent in Portugal, the interviewee describes them as being all very much the same. He states that his family, composed of his mother-in-law Diane, his wife Fiona and their two children, spent their days more independently than other members of the group. They were most often with the couple Russell and Jane.

Concerning the remaining members of the group, normally they met them in the morning and went for breakfast together at the "Millennium" restaurant, after which they left their children at the Kids Club and the adults went to do sports inside the tourist complex or they went to the beach. The couple Gerry and Kate usually had breakfast in the apartment.

Fiona Payne May 4
The routines.

Concerning what they usually do, the interviewee says that in the morning, after breakfast, which they have as a family in the bar at a club at around 8.15/8.30, they place their children in one of the complex's crèches, in different sections.

Matthew Oldfield May 4
That since they arrived in Portugal, until last night, the days were all the same. In the morning, the group woke between 6.30 and 8am and that they all went on foot to the, "Millennium," around 10 minutes from the complex. That only Madeleine's parents, Madeleine and the twins had breakfast in their apartment due to the fact that they have three very small children.

That after breakfast, the children were left at the "Kids Club" of the complex. Madeleine and **** go to the mini-club for their age and the other children go to another club for younger children.

Rachael Mampilly May 4
After breakfast, taken between 8 and 9 am in the Millennium restaurant, she takes her daughter to the Kids Club, about 10 minutes walk from the apartment. The other couples do exactly the same thing, with the exception of Gerry and Kate McCann who have breakfast in their apartment. The interviewee's daughter goes to a room at the Kids Club which is close to the, "TAPAS," restaurant. Madeleine goes to another room, situated near the club's reception, because she is older.

Dianne Webster May 4th
Concerning the usual routines, the deponent states that she only spent the afternoons with her family, and that not always, because she read, she went shopping or did other things. In the morning, she only had breakfast with her family on one day, the Wednesday, because it was raining. On the other days, she spent the mornings playing tennis.

Russell O'Brien May 4
The informant completely corroborates the statements by his partner Jane Tanner and Rachael Mampilly.

Gerald Patrick McCann, on the 10th of May 2007,

The following day (Sunday), the children woke up at 08h00, the deponent and his wife having woken up at around 07h30. They got dressed and at about 08h40 they left the apartment going to the MILLENIUM restaurant, once more on foot and by the same route as on the previous night, but without the mistake referred to previously, arriving there at 08h45/09h00. The group did not all arrive at the same time, rather in a phased manner, therefore they were not all seated at the same table.

He thinks that MATHEW and his wife RACHEL did not take breakfast due to the former having spent a bad night with vomiting and diarrhoea. At breakfast the children again sat at the same table among the adults, and it finished at around 09h25.

The deponent, his wife KATE and their three children went to the OCEAN CLUB by the same route, where they arrived at 09h40, the deponent having entered the apartment by the main door, which was locked, collecting a bag with clothing and creams for the children, then going inside the resort area. The twins stayed at the crèche next to the TAPAS, which was for children aged between one and two, and then he and KATE took MADELEINE to the other crèche for older children, which is located on the 1st floor at the resort’s main reception, where they arrived at around 09h50. Besides MADELEINE, from the group, only Ella, the daughter of JANE and RUSSEL, went to the same crèche. The remaining children, being very young, stayed at the crèche next to the TAPAS.

Again he went on foot, leaving the secondary reception he turned right, went down the street passing the “BATISTA” supermarket, turned left passing the main reception. After putting the children in their crèches they went to the “BATISTA” supermarket where they bought items for the following lunch and breakfast.

Arguido questioning of Gerald Patrick McCann, on the 7th of September 2007

No mention of breakfast

Witness statement of Kate Marie Healy, on the 6th of September 2007,

Food was bought by her and GERRY at the “Baptista” supermarket. She refers that the stay included breakfast at the Milénio restaurant, but as it was too far away they’d decided to have breakfast at the apartment.

Jane Tanner May 10
Every day they had breakfast at the Millenium restaurant and only afterwards did they take the children, on foot, to Kids Club, it being that ROB took El to Mini Club and she took Ev.

Questioned about the route that the McCanns took with their children to Kids Club (since they took breakfast in the apartment), she said she did not know.

4078 "You mentioned breakfast.”
Reply "Yeah.”
4078 "Am I right in thinking you went to the Millennium?”
Reply "We went to the Millennium for breakfast yeah. I think that first morning on the
Sunday everybody, the whole group went that first, well I’m not sure if Dave and Fi
did but I know Kate and Gerry went that first morning to the Millennium Restaurant
and I think they found it quite a, a trail to get because they’d got three kids, the ones
that were two, they were carrying the twins and dragging Madeleine so I think then
after that they decided they’d have breakfast in their room after their first day because
it was a bit of a, not an ordeal, but it was a bit of a trek to get back.”

4078 "Ah it is, the children to get out of bed in the morning.”
Reply "Yeah.”
4078 "Then you want your breakfast.”
11.16 Reply "Yeah, so, but I think that first day we did all go so I can’t say for sure for Dave and
Fi, but...”
4078 "Okay.”
Reply "The rest of us definitely did.”
4078 "So you can remember having your breakfast at the Millennium.”
Reply "Yeah.”

00.45 4078 “Madeleine, how much of Madeleine did you see?”
Reply “Not that much really because only really because she didn’t come to breakfast, so
we saw the other children at breakfast and their lunch, but because they tended to
have breakfast and lunch separately, the only time I really saw her was at, erm, after
high tea when we were playing in the play area, was the main times that I probably
saw her during the week”.

4078 “Try and get yourself back there and go through the motions that you went through
on that Thursday”.
Reply “Yeah”.
4078 “And see how you get on”.
Reply “Okay. Erm, that morning I didn’t go for breakfast at Millennium, I think we’d been
a bit later the night before, so we just thought, ‘Oh let’s just’, we just stayed in bed a
bit longer. We didn’t, so I didn’t, like I say, I didn’t go, I just went straight to the,
straight to the tennis lesson. So I think Russell took, Russell took Exxxx and Exx up to
the Millennium with, erm, I think he went with Matt. Again, I’m not sure, but I think
he went up with Matt and G***e up to the Millennium, and Rachael and I went to
play tennis. So I think that was the only morning I probably didn’t go, didn’t go for
breakfast, was the Thursday. So then we had our, we had the tennis lesson as normal
in the morning. I think Exx, no, Exx definitely didn’t go to the Kids Club that
morning. So I think Russell went for breakfast, took the kids for breakfast at the
MILLENIUM, then walked down, dropped Exxxx off at her Kids Club and then
brought Exx back to watch us playing tennis, no. No, I got that wrong, sorry, doh, I
got it wrong actually. So that, you know how I said on the Wednesday we had been
watching them having their tennis lesson and we spoke to the chap, it wasn’t the
person that said ‘Isn’t it bad that you video’. Exxxx, so, hang on, let’s go back. I’m
just getting myself all. On the Wednesday me, Rachael and Kate watched Exxxx and
Madeleine having their tennis lesson”.

Questioned regarding his routine during the holidays, he confirms in all of his previous declarations and that his version is absolutely in line with his companion’s Jane Tanner. He also verifies in the total conformity between his declarations and those of Jane Tanner regarding the holiday trip, of the constitution of the group and of the daily routine of the adults and the children which accompanied this group in the tourist complex, the Ocean Club, in Praia da Luz-Lagos.

Sunday 29th April 2007 I had booked into water-sports on the Saturday but I don't think they operated on Sunday. I can't recall exactly what I did on what day but I had booked to have windsurfing lessons and to do a bit of sailing. My recollection now is a little poor due to the lapse in time I got up around 08:00-08:30am we had breakfast at the Millennium restaurant, we went down to the beach, played a bit of tennis- but as I'm not a brilliant player I wasn't all that bothered about playing tennis.

On the 3rd May 2007 I saw Madeleine in the morning a couple of times this was when I dropped E*** off. I took the kids up to breakfast at the Millennium club and walked to the Ocean Club I was late getting E**a there, the kids were having a great time at the kids club and all appeared to well.

Reply "Err I mean we could you know obviously there’s the Supermarket, which wasn’t too err far away, did we all go up, I’m trying to think whether we went to the Millennium for the breakfast or whether we went to the Supermarket on the first day. I can’t remember, I’m sorry.”

Reply "I mean well L*** and err Scarlet you know, being the different age groups, were in different places and err Scarlet was down by the err the actual reception at the Ocean Club and err Scarlet, err L*** was up at the err Tapas bar. Err so generally Fi would take Scarlet after breakfast err which we you know we did often have. 1485 "Yeah.”
Reply "One into the other, whether you know we were at the Millennium but I seem to remember that we would generally go to the Millennium. There was one morning I can recollect that err you know that Kate and Gerry were walking back and found it difficult because Sean and Amelie were, as I say, in the age where they wanted to walk but it was difficult to get them and I think they were, you know generally thinking that the Millennium for breakfast wasn’t probably a particularly a good idea, which you know I think more often than not we generally ate at the Millennium, err and then after we’d eaten breakfast there which, and again I think finished at nine o’ clock, we would then, you know after we’d finished breakfast try and get them down to err you know drop them off at the Ocean Club or at the crèche by the Tapas, then you know depending on whether there was anything going on that morning from the sporting point of view then you know we’d go wherever. Err you know mixed into the melee was you know we often went in the morning to the Supermarket to do a bit of a shop and you know with a big group that we seemed to get through things pretty quickly and err so as I say I’m afraid one day does blur into another, I can’t really recall specifics.”

When asked, she says she remembers the McCann family as they often used the restaurant where she worked although she adds that she never had a conversation with them.

She cannot say anything that would help clarify the events as she heard about the disappearance in an indirect way.
She says that the child and her parents frequented the restaurant where they would have breakfast.
When asked, she says that she can not remember the date when they first began to frequent the restaurant.
However she is certain that they frequented the restaurant from the beginning of the week.

She does not know whether they consumed other meals at the restaurant given her working hours.

She can only say that the family appeared normal and affectionate. She never had any contact with the child or her family in other places and the only contact she had with them was professional.

She says that her job is to receive guests at the entrance to the Millenium restaurant and check whether they have to pay for breakfast or whether this is included in their package. She works from 07.00 to 12.00 from Tuesdays to Saturdays. She says that she only attends to guests at breakfast time except on Wednesdays when there is Barbecue Night at the restaurant and when she welcomes guests for dinner, working from 18.00 to 22.00.

When asked, she says that due to her work she knows most of the guests given that most of them visit the Millenium as it is the only restaurant that serves breakfast.

When asked, she says that she knows the parents, the siblings and Madeleine. She received them for breakfast on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, she does not know whether they went for breakfast on Sunday or Monday, as these were her days off.

She says that breakfast was served between 08.00 and 10.00 and that the McCanns would arrive between 08.00 and 09.00.

She says that the McCanns appeared to be a normal family and that the relation between the members of the family was very good. Madeleine appeared to be very attached to her father and was always clinging on to him. Given her public relations function she was always very nice to the guests and would get involved with the children, saying that Madeleine was very shy and did not respond to her. She says that the only contact she had with guests was at the entrance to the Millenium restaurant, she did not have a view of the tables or the Buffet area.

After seeing their [the McCann’s] picture, he immediately remembered that he had seen them having breakfast in the restaurant where he works, but that he does not remember any situation in particular involving this family, nor does he remember hearing or noticing any strange situation involving their presence.

He remembered being in the presence of the group Madeleine belonged to, composed of nine adults and eight children on the 28th April, the day they arrived at the resort. Apart from breakfast, which they would eat every day in the Millenium restaurant, dinner on Saturday night was the only meal they had there because the Tapas bar did not serve dinner on Saturdays. He remembered that Saturdays dinner was a buffet service and that he had been very close to the group, giving them all the necessary indications related to the service. In spite not recalling Madeleine’s exact features, he presumes she was there with the other children present. He did not notice anything particular about the girl, nor was there any difference in the normal tranquillity in spite of the fact that there were 8 children.

He does not remember serving breakfast to the group, given that this would occur before he began work.
