Fresh searches for Madeleine McCann are to be ordered by Portuguese police as part of a review of the investigation as they receive the results of new laboratory tests.

Paulo Rebelo, the new head of the investigation, is expected to request that searches are carried out within a nine-mile (15km) radius of the Ocean Club holiday resort in Praia da Luz where Madeleine vanished on May 3.

Areas to be examined include the coast between Praia da Luz and the village of Burgau, land between the Ocean Club and the beach, and the forests and isolated villas around the Bravura dam in Odiaxere, the Diario de Noticias newspaper reported. Previous searches of the area were called off three weeks after Madeleine disappeared because police had assumed that she was dead.

Mr Rebelo has appointed six experts to review “loose ends” in the police investigation. One of the experts is believed to be a member of the Serviços de Informação e Segurança (SIS), the Portuguese equivalent of MI5.

The McCanns, from Rothley, Leicestershire, were made official suspects on September 7, but have strenuously denied any involvement in the disappearance of Madeleine shortly before her fourth birthday.

Alípio Ribeiro, the national director of the Polícia Judici�ria, said last week that all lines of inquiry were open after The Times reported that police had failed to identify DNA samples and fingerprints found at the apartment where Madeleine disappeared and could not trace some mobile phone calls made in the area.

Detectives spent two days last week preparing for a detailed reconstruction of events by studying the ground-floor apartment where Madeleine slept.

They have also analysed a route leading from the Ocean Club to the beach at Praia da Luz and they want the seven British friends who were on holiday with the McCanns to be re-interviewed to clear up inconsistencies in their previous statements.

The Times reported last week that British police have been asked to take DNA samples and fingerprints from holidaymakers who were at the Ocean Club on May 3. German and Dutch police have received similar requests.

The Portuguese detectives will today consider the latest results of tests carried out by the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham on samples found in the McCanns’ apartment and a car hired 25 days after Madeleine vanished.

The Mail on Sunday reported yesterday that the service had found evidence of a bloody footprint in the McCanns’ apartment with an inconclusive match to Madeleine’s blood.

According to Portuguese newspaper the Correio Da Manha, the "meticulous" Rebelo has ordered his reinforced team to pay "special attention" to the area around the jagged reservoir, which has a 25 mile perimeter, and is 15 miles from Luz. 

Sites to the south of the Ocean Club where the McCanns and their friends stayed, including Luz and Burgau beaches, are also to be "fine combed" by inspectors, who will particularly focus on spots where the British group used their mobile telephones.

A friend of Kate and Gerry McCann said: "Any widening of the search area is encouraging and we would welcome that. It does sound as though there is more vigour in that aspect of the inquiry which is good." 

He added that while it would be a "tragedy" for the family if police searches eventually yield the little girl's body, at least it would help lift the cloud of suspicion from them. 

"If she is dead then she is dead but not by their hand," he said. 

Another friend dismissed a report this weekend about suspicious footprints in the McCanns' apartment and the car they hired 25 days after Madeleine went missing as being like "something out of an Agatha Christie novel".

"It doesn't imply guilt in any shape or form," she said. "There are a lot of perfectly good reasons why a footprint of that nature might be found." 

Newspapers cited a report on results due back from the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham this week that detailed a footprint in the apartment which had specks of unidentified blood in it, linking this to a potentially matching footprint above the bumper of the McCanns' car.

But an FSS source said: "The simple fact is, as was the case before, the results are not conclusive." 

Meanwhile, it emerged that Kate and Gerry McCann, both 39-year-old doctors from Rothley in Leicestershire, could be the only official suspects in their daughter's disappearance within a month. 

According to British expatriate Robert Murat's lawyer, Francisco Pagarete: "It's possible that in the next four weeks his status will be cleared because we will have reached six months since he has been a suspect in this case." 

He said the District Attorney could still step in to increase the time limit detectives have to decide about their suspects, but added: "If they consider that the situation with regards to my client his already been resolved then his status will be lifted and he can get on with his life. It's just a question of waiting."

Madeleine police to search remote reservoir after mobile phone 'clue'

Detectives will scour a ten-mile area around Praia da Luz and a reservoir surrounded by forests as the search for Madeleine McCann gains new intensity this week. 
In the first large-scale searches for more than three months, Paulo Rebelo, the new head of the investigation, has not ruled out using divers at the 2.5mile wide reservoir. 
Mr Rebelo has overseen a fresh look at the McCann holiday apartment and has ordered a root-and-branch review of the five-month investigation. 
The Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias said the new search areas were linked to mobile phone calls made by the McCanns and their friends while they were in the Algarve. 
It was not clear whether the calls had been traced to the areas, or if police believed they had been discussed by the McCanns during their phone conversations. 
The area around the reservoir, known as the Barragem da Bravura, or Wilderness Reservoir, is a remote, isolated spot which would not rank highly on a normal family holiday itinerary. 
The man-made lake, near the village of Odiaxere, lies near the main road from Lagos to Portimao but is not a tourist attraction. 
It is surrounded by forests and Mr Rebelo was said to feel it had not been examined properly in May, when up to 300 officers carried out searches for Madeleine. 
He has ordered his team to pay 'special attention' to the reservoir, but they will also search sites around Praia da Luz and neighbouring Burgau for any sign of the child. 
Portuguese police have faced widespread criticism that they did not search properly for Madeleine in the days and weeks after she disappeared from her parents' apartment in the Ocean Club complex on May 3. 
Mr Rebelo has brought in four new officers to boost the investigation, including two murder specialists, and has told them to reconsider every aspect of the case. 
He has also drafted in two data analysts known as 'The Cleaners' because of their forensic approach, who will study every decision made by the previous leaders of the search. 
Mr Rebelo, Portugal's second most senior detective, has also made a request via Europol for British police to investigate Kate and Gerry McCanns' background, including their university days. 
Friends of the couple said they hoped Mr Rebelo's meticulous approach would lead to them being eliminated as suspects.

'It could be more but it depends on how the District Attorney sees it. 
'In some complex cases it can up to a year before suspects are cleared. However, if they consider that the situation with regards to my client has already been resolved then his status will be lifted and he can get on with his life.' 
This week will see the inquiry reach a crucial stage as the new searches are carried out and the McCanns finally learn the results of forensic tests carried out on samples taken from their apartment and hire car. 
The results could be handed over to Portuguese police tomorrow but will probably have to go via two government ministries because of the political sensitivities of the case. 
A friend of the McCanns claimed detectives in Portugal were told of the main findings of the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham over the weekend, but would not be formally given the results until later this week. 
He said the couple, who have always vehemently denied any involvement in their daughter's disappearance, had not been told any of the results. 
'They haven't heard a word about these latest findings and don't have a clue what's going on,' he said. 
'Despite being made the focus of the investigation and accused of playing a part in their daughter's death, they seem to be among the last people to be told anything.'

A search is also expected of the dense woodland and isolated dwellings around the reservoir - known locally as Barragem da Bravura, literally the Reservoir of the Wilderness - which leading detective Paulo Rebelo believes was not combed carefully enough in the days following the four-year-old's disappearance. According to Portuguese newspaper the Correio Da Manha, the "meticulous" Rebelo has ordered his reinforced team to pay "special attention" to the area around the jagged reservoir, which has a 25 mile perimeter, and is 15 miles from Luz. Sites to the south of the Ocean Club where the McCanns and their friends stayed, including Luz and Burgau beaches, are also to be "fine combed" by inspectors, who will particularly focus on spots where the British group used their mobile telephones. "It doesn't imply guilt in any shape or form," she said. "There are a lot of perfectly good reasons why a footprint of that nature might be found." Newspapers cited a report on results due back from the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham this week that detailed a footprint in the apartment which had specks of unidentified blood in it, linking this to a potentially matching footprint above the bumper of the McCanns' car. But an FSS source said: "The simple fact is, as was the case before, the results are not conclusive." Meanwhile, it emerged that Kate and Gerry McCann, both 39-year-old doctors from Rothley in Leicestershire, could be the only official suspects in their daughter's disappearance within a month. According to British expatriate Robert Murat's lawyer, Francisco Pagarete: "It's possible that in the next four weeks his status will be cleared because we will have reached six months since he has been a suspect in this case." He said the District Attorney could still step in to increase the time limit detectives have to decide about their suspects, but added: "If they consider that the situation with regards to my client his already been resolved then his status will be lifted and he can get on with his life. It's just a question of waiting."

It is surrounded by forests and Mr Rebelo was said to feel it had not been examined properly in May, when up to 300 officers carried out searches for Madeleine. He has ordered his team to pay 'special attention' to the reservoir, but they will also search sites around Praia da Luz and neighbouring Burgau for any sign of the child.
