A bloody footprint was found in Kate and Gerry McCann’s apartment, matching a print on their hire car, according to a forensic report shown to The Mail on Sunday.
The existence of the two marks, which has never been revealed until today, is apparently at the heart of renewed suspicion that the couple were involved in their daughter’s disappearance.
New tests carried out at the Forensic Science Service laboratory in Birmingham show there is a ‘moderate’ chance that the blood belonged to Madeleine. But the results are inconclusive.
Anguish: Kate and Gerry McCann
The inquiry into the four-year-old’s disappearance has been rife with conjecture and wild speculation over DNA material.
And, until now, confusion has surrounded what samples had been found and how important they might be.
Part of the report shown to this newspaper reveals that officers who examined the McCanns’ apartment in Praia da Luz on the Algarve after Madeleine went missing on May 3 discovered a ‘partial footwear mark’, believed to be from a size 5 or 6 shoe, just outside the bedroom.
It adds that it ‘appeared to have a blood imprint’ that was visible to the naked eye.
The FSS results conclude that the footprint matched the pattern of a mark found above the rear bumper of the McCanns’ Renault Scenic hire car – a print which Portuguese police apparently believe is consistent with someone lifting a body in or out of the boot.
Experts could find no definite traces of blood in that print.
The nanny who could help clear the McCanns’ name
Blood in the footprint at the apartment was tested for DNA. Results are rated on an eight-point scale: no scientific evidence, limited, moderate, moderately strong, strong, very strong, extremely strong and conclusive.
Scientists found there was only ‘moderate’ support, number 3 on the scale, to suggest it matched Madeleine’s DNA.
What they believe is significant about the footprint is that no traces of blood were found around it.
‘It is quite possible, therefore, that the blood had been picked up on the sole of the shoe from outside the apartment, from literally anywhere,’ said a source close to the investigation.

The source added that there was concern at the FSS that the Portuguese police have already attached too much weight to the results.
It has been reported, for instance, that DNA results justified the naming of the McCanns as official suspects, or arguidos.
‘The simple fact is that, as was the case before, the results are not conclusive,’ said the source.
‘In short, it cannot be said the blood belongs to Madeleine. If other strong evidence accompanied it – for example, that someone was seen emerging from the apartment with a hammer – then a lawyer might find it of some use. But on its own it is of little value.’
Further question marks were raised over the forensic evidence last night, as Portuguese police have still failed to take DNA samples from people who helped in the initial stages of the search for Madeleine.
These profiles would prove crucial in matching scene-of-crime evidence to those who were at the resort.
One resident who had not been asked to give a sample said: ‘I thought it was quite important for us to give DNA so that we could be ruled out if nothing else. There were lots of us helping look for the little girl that night and you would have thought our DNA would be all over the place.’
The FSS report says the footprint found in the apartment ‘was made when the foot was heading towards the bedroom’.
‘The impression was made up of small circles and square blocks. It is not possible to ascertain whether the shoe print was from an adult or a child but it is estimated that it was a shoe size 5 or possibly 6. It was of a right shoe.
‘The shoe print found at the rear of the Renault hire car below the boot area and above part of the rear bumper was a left-sided shoe and the impression has similar pattern component, pattern size and degree of wear to the outer toe region of the sole to match the right shoe, and again has circles and square blocks. A swab for blood from this mark has been examined but it proved inconclusive.’
This is the first time that forensic evidence relating to the case has been presented in such detail.
Sources have told this newspaper that the sample taken from the apartment was not of good quality. Other partial prints were underneath it and it had been walked over countless times.
Tests were carried out to determine whether anyone had tried to clean it up, and, crucially, the results showed that no ‘concerted’ effort had been made.
‘If someone had tried to wipe it away, using bleach, for instance, this would have shown up clearly in the results,’ said the source.
There is also concern over the Portuguese police’s interpretation of the print on the Renault Scenic.
‘They seem to think it is consistent with someone putting their foot on the boot to lever a body in or out. But there could be 101 reasons why someone would put their foot on the car in this way,’ the source said.
A pair of Madeleine’s ankle socks – ‘heavily stained on the sole and the heel’ – were also examined at the Birmingham laboratory.
It could not be determined whether the stains contained blood and were deemed to hold ‘limited scientific’ evidence.

Nail clippings found in the hire car were found to contain fragments of paint but otherwise to be ‘of no significance’.
The McCanns have always vehemently denied any involvement in their daughter’s disappearance and will view the new report as confirmation of their fears that the Portuguese police are overplaying the importance of forensic evidence.
The couple have consistently said any material found in Portugal can be wholly and innocently explained. They have hired their own forensic experts to refute Portuguese police claims that the new DNA tests link them to Madeleine’s disappearance.
But the Policia Judiciaria have not contacted the McCanns since they returned to their Leicestershire home more than a month ago.
A friend said: ‘They have not heard a word. It’s a shambles considering they have been made the focus of the investigation and stand accused of playing a part in their daughter’s death. They don’t have a clue what’s going on.’
Last night, Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns’ spokesman, said: ‘We simply cannot comment on unsubstantiated reports that touch on any evidence at the centre of this inquiry.’
Meanwhile, detectives are focusing on evidence from former Mark Warner nanny Charlotte Pennington, 20, that she saw a man dropping a ‘bundle’ from a dinghy into the Atlantic just off Praia da Luz at 11.30pm on the night Madeleine disappeared.
A police source described the sighting as ‘credible’, but questions hang over it.
Miss Pennington said the man’s jacket had a yellow reflective hood, and for her to have seen him in the dark, the boat would have had to be close to shore.

By the way the bloody footprint on the Mccanns car actually came from a GNR's size 5 shoe. Its in the files along with a GNR fingerpint.

NEWS.COM: MONDAY 15 OCTOBER 2007

A BLOODY footprint found in the apartment rented by Kate and Gerry McCann matched a print on their hire car, a forensic report shown to The Mail on Sunday newspaper reveals .

The existence of the marks is thought to be central to renewed suspicion of the couple over the disappearance of their four-year-old daughter, Madeleine.

Testing by Birmingham's Forensic Science Service laboratory reveals there is a "moderate" chance the blood was Madeleine's but the results were inconclusive.

The investigation into Madeleine's disappearance has been punctuated by speculation over DNA and , until now, there has been confusion surrounding what samples had been found and how important they might be.

Part of the report reveals officers who examined the McCanns' apartment in Praia da Luz on the Algarve after Madeleine vanished on May 3 found a "partial footwear mark", said to be from a size five or six shoe, outside the bedroom.

It added that it "appeared to have a blood imprint" visible to the naked eye.

The test results said the footprint was a match for the pattern of a mark found above the rear bumper of the McCanns' hire car, a print which police in Portugal apparently believe is consistent with someone lifting a body in or out of the boot.

Investigators found no traces of blood in that print, but blood in the footprint at the apartment was tested for DNA.

The DNA test results are rated on an eight-point scale: no scientific evidence, limited, moderate, moderately strong, strong, very strong, extremely strong and conclusive.

Ttests showed only  "moderate" support - No.3 on the scale - to suggest it matched Madeleine McCann's DNA.

But what scientists believe is significant is that no traces of blood were found around the print.

"It is quite possible, therefore, that the blood had been picked up on the sole of the shoe from outside the apartment, from literally anywhere," a source close to the investigation said.

The source said there was concern that Portuguese investigators had already placed too much importance to the results.

Madeleine police: Seven more weeks and we're giving up

Last updated at 21:15 04 November 2007

<!-- google_ad_section_start(name=s2) -->

Portuguese detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have revealed they plan to close the case by Christmas, it was reported today.

Police have admitted that unless new leads can be found in the coming weeks, the case will be wrapped up and Madeleine's whereabouts will remain a mystery.

A police source told the Sunday Mirror: "There is quite simply no evidence strong enough to use against the McCanns.

"Unless a new piece of evidence falls out of the sky - some good forensics which will tie everything together - the case will be closed in a few weeks without conclusion."

A newly released picture shows Maddie enjoying a pony ride with smiling mum Kate

A friend of Kate and Gerry McCann described the move as "the worst thing that could happen" in the hunt to find their daughter.

The couple remain convinced Madeleine was taken alive from their holiday apartment and smuggled into North Africa.

They have employed a private detective agency Metodo 3 to follow up numerous sightings of Madeleine in Morocco.

But with the case closed, a cloud of suspicion would remain hanging over the couple after they were named official suspects in September.

The friend said: "We want to see the police do everything in their power to find Maddie.

"The worst thing that could happen is for the case to close and Gerry and Kate to remain official suspects."

Police believe Gerry and Kate gave their daughter an accidental overdose of sedatives and kept the body in their holiday apartment for over three weeks before moving it in a hire car to be disposed.

To back up their case, police have taken hundreds of DNA samples in the apartment and the hire car used by the McCanns.

Cloud of suspicion: Kate and Gerry are shocked to hear the police plan to close the investigation

But a source close to the private detectives hired by the McCanns claims the samples - which are still being examined by the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham - are heavily contaminated and do not provide reliable evidence in the case.

One forensic officer was reported to have worked on the car even though the plastic gloves he was wearing to protect against contamination split.

Another claim used against the McCanns - the revelation that there was thought to be a bloodied footprint on the rear bumper of the hire car - turned out to be the footprint of an officer.

The footprint was believed to match a similar print discovered in the McCann's apartment.

But the sample sent to Birmingham for tests was shown to match the shoe of a forensic investigator.

The source added: "It beggars belief how incompetently this investigation has been run.

"If it wasn't so serious it would be funny. It's no wonder it has taken so long for the results of forensic tests in the UK to come back."

Fresh searches for Madeleine McCann are to be ordered by Portuguese police as part of a review of the investigation as they receive the results of new laboratory tests.

Paulo Rebelo, the new head of the investigation, is expected to request that searches are carried out within a nine-mile (15km) radius of the Ocean Club holiday resort in Praia da Luz where Madeleine vanished on May 3.

Areas to be examined include the coast between Praia da Luz and the village of Burgau, land between the Ocean Club and the beach, and the forests and isolated villas around the Bravura dam in Odiaxere, the Diario de Noticias newspaper reported. Previous searches of the area were called off three weeks after Madeleine disappeared because police had assumed that she was dead.

Mr Rebelo has appointed six experts to review “loose ends” in the police investigation. One of the experts is believed to be a member of the Serviços de Informação e Segurança (SIS), the Portuguese equivalent of MI5.

The McCanns, from Rothley, Leicestershire, were made official suspects on September 7, but have strenuously denied any involvement in the disappearance of Madeleine shortly before her fourth birthday.

Alípio Ribeiro, the national director of the Polícia Judiciária, said last week that all lines of inquiry were open after The Times reported that police had failed to identify DNA samples and fingerprints found at the apartment where Madeleine disappeared and could not trace some mobile phone calls made in the area.

Detectives spent two days last week preparing for a detailed reconstruction of events by studying the ground-floor apartment where Madeleine slept.

They have also analysed a route leading from the Ocean Club to the beach at Praia da Luz and they want the seven British friends who were on holiday with the McCanns to be re-interviewed to clear up inconsistencies in their previous statements.

The Times reported last week that British police have been asked to take DNA samples and fingerprints from holidaymakers who were at the Ocean Club on May 3. German and Dutch police have received similar requests.

The Portuguese detectives will today consider the latest results of tests carried out by the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham on samples found in the McCanns’ apartment and a car hired 25 days after Madeleine vanished.

The Mail on Sunday reported yesterday that the service had found evidence of a bloody footprint in the McCanns’ apartment with an inconclusive match to Madeleine’s blood.

Shameful finger-pointing at likely innocent man
Up to the weekend, we had the Clue of the Jemmied Shutter, the Clue of the Tiny Window (of Opportunity), CuddleCat Clue, the Clue of the Missing Hours and the Car Boot Clue. The Sunday papers brought us the Clue of the Undisturbed Bedding and, most sensationally, the Clues of the Bloodied Footprint and the Footprint on the Bumper.
For suspects, we've had the Hooded Boatman, Bundleman, Burglar Gone Wrong, The Lone Opportunist, Egg Head Man, The International Paedophile Ring, The Arab Chap, The Moroccan Gypsies, The Filling Station Couple, Jemmied Shutter Man, Drogheda Man (like Bundleman but spotted by a man from Co Louth), Stairwell Man, The English Yachtsman (deceased) ? and, er, the most durable of all, Glass Eye Man.
This latter - also trading as Huntley Man and Hanging Round Reporters Man - appears certain to be revealed shortly as Watertight Alibi Man.
Robert Murat has been an arguido in the Madeleine McCann case since May 17. That's five months ago.
He's been outrageously vilified in the British press. His life has been investigated by the police of two countries and most of what they found - and plenty they didn't find at all - turned up in a media desperate for a conventional villain to round off this most disturbing tale.
Murat's mother's house in Praia da Luz was rooted through in a search for anything which might link the ex-pat Brit to the disappearance. Nothing was found.
At the weekend, his family was able to do a brief TV interview, giving his sorry side to the saga. He isn't able to speak about the case himself, because of Portuguese law - a stricture which doesn't seem to bother the McCann PR team one bit.
For months now, the talk has been that Murat will find his arguido status lifted and be free to resume a normal life.
That's the theory, of course. What has actually been happening is that in an effort to explain those few fragments of the evidence in the possession of the British and Portuguese police which alarmingly have directed their attention to the parents and which have reached the public press, the McCann PR team returns ceaselessly to invoke Man Who Looks Like Murat Man.
The upshot is, regardless of the determinations of the police, Robert Murat may always carry about him, in the eyes of an uninformed few, the aura of Man Who Abducted Madeleine Man.
Which isn't good. And isn't fair.
Especially as he may turn out to be - uniquely among the possible suspects, current or future - the first Entirely Innocent Man among them.

Correio da Manha 15.10.07

148 computers inspected
Maddie searched for within paedophilia sites

The faces of hundreds of children are blurred on paedophilia sites, but Judiciaria's experts used special software to reconstitute blond girls, with ages and characteristics that resemble Maddie's, in another dismissalof leads within the search of the English girl. 148 computers that had been apprehended all over the country on Tuesday were thoroughly searched - and once more, nothing was found.

The theory of death inside the apartment in Praia da Luz is still the top priority for the PJ, with the Portimao team now reinforced with six experienced inspectors - four of which in the area of violent crime. But it is obligatory that all possibilities "are kept open" in the inquiry phase, as the national director, Alipio Ribeiro, has remembered.

CM knows that operation 'Predator' was being prepared for over six months, through an investigation that could count on information from Interpol, and which is completely unrelated with the Maddie case. But given the fact that the 148 computers had been seized from all over the country, from 80 potential sex predators, the search for the English child among hundreds of files containing movies and photographs ended up being "a logical consequence".

The goal was to search for girls that were the approximate age and had "physiognomical traces" that were similar to Maddie's - but among hundreds of images, CM knows that none of the victims was the English child that disappeared on May 3.

Most of the children that are used by paedophile rings on the internet "have their faces blurred out", according to our sources, as well as their abusers. That was the case of the foreign paedophile whose photo Interpol circulated last week, but from which the authorities managed to recover the original image - using image processing software that allows to reconstruct the modified face.

Bloody footprints make no sense at all

A footprint that carried blood residues was allegedly found at the exit of one of the bedrooms in the apartment where Madeleine was sleeping, British weekly 'Mail on Sunday' advanced, but CM has found out that this is not true. The tabloid says that the partial print is from a right foot, size 38-39, which is "a senseless novelty" for sources that are connected to the process.

PJ was at the Ocean Club apartment during two phases of the investigation - first in May and then on late July and August - and at none of these moments did the experts detect any adult footprint with residues.

Anyway, the newspaper says it's "these two pieces of evidence" - the other one is a residue found on the car - that are at the base of the suspicions on the McCann couple. "It's these two prints, which had not been revealed until today [yesterday], that make them suspects in the disappearance of their daughter".

"The latest tests that were performed by the Forensic Science Service point to a 'reasonable' hypothesis that the blood belongs to Madeleine, but the results are inconclusive".

This happened on the day that 'News of the World' discovered a theory for Kate to have run screaming that someone had taken her daughter: "Maddie's shape lying in bed was imprinted on her bedsheets" and the mother immediately noticed that detail.

Portuguese police: Were Kate and Gerry drunk on night Madeleine vanished?

By VANESSA ALLEN and DAVID JONES

Last updated at 17:37 05 November 2007

<!-- google_ad_section_start(name=s2) -->

Detectives leading the hunt for Madeleine McCann have questioned witnesses about how much her parents drank on the night she vanished.

They interrogated waiters and other workers at the tapas bar where they ate on May 3, asking: "Were they drunk?" The new head of the investigation, Paulo Rebelo, has even summoned the junior local police officers who were first on the scene to ask whether the group seemed inebriated.

Kate and Gerry McCann have always said they and their seven friends ordered six bottles of wine, but that two remained virtually untouched because they discovered their daughter was missing.

Leaks from inside the police investigation suggested the so-called Tapas Nine ordered daiquiris, martinis and beers before dinner, downed up to 14 bottles of wine with their meal, and usually enjoyed almond liqueur afterwards.

Kate Gerry McCann

Police are questioning witnesses about how much Gerry and Kate McCann may have drunk on the night that their daughter Madeleine disappeared

But the group's waiter, Jose Baptista, said they were 'very sensible' about their drinking and usually had eight to ten bottles over the course of two or three hours.

A second worker at the tapas bar, who asked not to be named, said: "They didn't drink any more than anyone else. 'They might have been tipsy but they weren't falling over. Everyone handles drink differently."

The group of four families dined together every night and all left their children sleeping in their own apartments, about 40 metres from the tapas bar.

The local police officers who were summoned to the complex after Mrs McCann realised Madeleine was missing said the group "seemed to be normal" and were not drunk, the Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha said.

Mr Rebelo has launched a review of every step of the six-month investigation in the hope of discovering a previously unchecked 'loose end' which could crack the case.

Madeleine McCann has been missing since May 3rd

But while he insists his methodical "back-to-basics" techniques could still solve the crime, sources told the Sunday Mirror that the investigation is floundering once more and could be shelved by Christmas if a break-through is not made.

The newspaper said its sources believed Madeleine would never be found, and that the case would be downgraded within weeks if Mr Rebelo could not find stronger evidence of what had happened to the four-year-old.

The source said: "There is quite simply no evidence strong enough to use against the McCanns. Unless a new piece of evidence falls out of the sky - some good forensics which will tie everything together - the case will be closed in a few weeks without conclusion."

Mistakes have plagued the investigation. The apartment was not sealed off as a crime scene, meaning all the evidence there was contaminated, and police were allowed to drive the McCanns' hire car and a van belonging to the other named suspect Robert Murat to the police laboratory.

A footprint found on the couple's Renault Scenic was later found to belong to a Portuguese policeman, and a forensic officer continued vital checks on it despite his latex glove splitting half way through.

Mr and Mrs McCann, both 39, have said their worst fear would be never to know what happened to their daughter, and to always be left under a cloud of suspicion.

They have employed Spanish private detective agency Metodo 3 to follow up numerous sightings of Madeleine in Morocco, including two potential sightings of a blonde child with her distinctive fleck in her right eye.

The Mail told last week how Moroccan doctor Naoual Malhi saw the child in Fnideq, as she was bundled into a taxi by an older woman, and now a stallholder in the small coastal town has also claimed to have seen her.

Dr Malhi said: "He said he had seen the girl with the woman when she came to buy cheese and milk from his stall. He said he gave the girl a lollipop and noticed her distinctive right eye."

Metodo 3 have received over 400 calls, including ten new sightings of Madeleine in ten days, and their detectives plan to return to the remote mountain village of Karia ba Mohamed to investigate sightings of a "strange new girl".

A local school inspector said several people had spotted a woman with a blonde child who looked like Madeleine in the farming town, 35 miles north-west of Fez.

But the mayor of the remote district flatly denied the child could be held captive there. Lmfedal Lazar (corr) refused to order a search and scorned reports of sightings.

He snapped: "There are no paedophiles in Morocco so it is quite impossible that this girl is here. You should not even be investigating this. Your duty is to write good things about Morocco so that the tourists will come."

The McCanns' team of detectives are also checking claims that a Portuguese teacher told police she spotted the missing girl at Barcelona airport a few weeks after her disappearance.

Meanwhile, Mr McCann has told friends he plans to resume full-time work in January, after returning to his job part-time last week.

MADDIE VANISHED WITHOUT A TRACE
EXCLUSIVE by JERRY LAWTON
2 November 2007
Daily Star

MADELEINE McCann simply disappeared off the face of the Earth on May 3.

And an astonishing series of bungles by Portuguese police has led many to fear the mystery of her disappearance may never be solved.

Madeleine was last seen by an independent witness shortly before 7pm, when she was collected from the children's club at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz along with her brother and sister, twoyear-old twins Sean and Amelie.

Parents Kate and Gerry, both 39, took the children back to their apartment. At 8.30pm, they and seven pals started to arrive for dinner at a nearby tapas bar.

The couple had chosen not to take advantage of the resort's £10-an-hour babysitting service. Instead, they left their three children asleep – planning to check them every 20 minutes. At 9pm, Gerry left the tapas bar to look in on the children. At 9.05pm he checked again, walking in through the patio door, which was left unlocked.

He said he noticed the door to the children's bedroom was slightly ajar and, with hindsight, believes an abductor may have been hiding in the apartment.

But the children were fine, so he left.

At 9.15pm, one of the McCanns' pals, Jane Tanner, 36, left the bar to check on her own children, who had been sick.

On the way, she saw a man carrying off a child wearing pink pyjamas. She did not realise the significance at the time and simply returned to the tapas bar.

Shortly before 10pm, Kate went to check and found Madeleine missing.

On learning that the girl had been wearing pink pyjamas, Jane Tanner realised she had probably witnessed an abduction.

Kate said she knew instantly her daughter had been snatched because her favourite Cuddle Cat toy, which she always cradled, had been left on a shelf too high for her to reach.

After raising the alarm, all the pals joined in the frantic search. At 10.41pm police were called. Resort staff and fellow holidaymakers searched on until 4am.

The drama of those few hours has since prompted a wealth of theories about what happened to Madeleine – who vanished just before her fourth birthday.

THEORY ONE: She was abducted by a paedophile gang. Police initially favoured this idea, on the basis of Miss Tanner's reported sighting and another of a man seen on the beach with a child in his arms.

But detectives who later busted Portugal's biggest child porn gang found no trace of Madeleine's image. All known local paedophiles were eliminated.

THEORY TWO: She was kidnapped for a ransom. Police believed someone could have been watching the McCanns, realised they were relatively wealthy and that they had left their children alone.

But no ransom demand emerged, despite a £2.5million reward being offered.

THEORY THREE: She wandered out of the apartment and had an accident.

Police, holidaymakers and resort staff spent days searching the area, including roadworks and drains, but found no trace.

THEORY FOUR: She died inside the apartment.

British police sniffer dogs trained to detect blood and death reacted inside the flat.

They also reportedly found specks of blood on a wall and curtains, and a bloody footprint. Test results are still awaited. This remains the police's No1 theory.

THEORY FIVE: She died accidentally after being sedated. No one heard any screams and the twins were still sleeping when they were carried out from the apartment after Madeleine had vanished.

Detectives are awaiting the results of toxicology tests on strands of Madeleine's hair.

The McCanns insist they never sedated their children and say they have conducted their own tests to prove it.

THEORY SIX: Her parents disposed of her body after her accidental death.

Police say the sniffer dogs reacted inside a car the McCanns hired 24 days after Madeleine disappeared.

They claim to have found body fluid with an 88% match to her DNA in the boot. The McCanns deny any knowledge of her disappearance and insist they can explain any DNA.

THEORY SEVEN: She was snatched to order by a people-trafficking gang. The McCanns' private detectives believe she was smuggled to Morocco for a rich Arab couple. They are currently searching north Africa for her.

But the case has been hampered by an astonishing series of blunders by Portuguese police under the leadership of Goncalo Amaral – later replaced by top detective Paulo Rebelo.

They failed to seal off the scene in the hours after Madeleine was reported missing and wasted valuable hours before alerting border patrols. They also failed to trace everyone staying in the resort.

Officers even crashed a car belonging to suspect Robert Murat, 33, after seizing it for examination.

Is Madeleine McCann in reservoir?

Madeleine McCann (PA)

Cops to search isolated reservoir for body

Police will search an isolated reservoir where they believe Madeleine McCann's body could have been disposed of.

In the first searches for the missing four-year-old for more than three months, officers will scour undergrowth and dense forest around the Reservoir da Brevura, 15 miles from where she vanished.

Divers will also comb the vast manmade lake near the village of Odiaxere - on the main road from Praia da Luz.

Detectives on the investigation are expected to be joined by dozens of local officers.

Her parents Kate and Gerry were told of the move yesterday, adding to their anguish as they also learned they could soon become the only suspects after reports that Robert Murat is to be formally cleared.

Their spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "They are realistic enough to know Madeleine may be dead.

"But any widening of the search area is encouraging and we would welcome that."

The decision is not believed to follow any specific new intelligence but the realisation that the beauty spot has not been properly checked.

It was given only a cursory search on May 7, four days after Madeleine went missing.

New chief investigator Paulo Rebelo, 45, has also demanded searches in all areas within 10 miles of Praia da Luz.

Kate and Gerry - who prayed for Madeleine at two special services near their home in Rothley, Leics - have been told of reports that Murat, 33, would be cleared next month.

The British ex-pat was named as a suspect on May 14. That status will be automatically lifted after six months unless a senior officer applies for an extension.

Murat's lawyer Francisco Pagarete said: "If they consider the situation resolved, his status will be lifted and he can get on with his life."

Friends of the McCanns blasted reports that police had found a "bloody footprint" in their holiday apartment which apparently matched another on the bumper of their hire car.

The partial print, believed to match Kate's shoe size, was apparently on floor tiles outside the bedroom and allegedly contained blood which tests showed was a "moderate" match to Madeleine's.

Reports said the same shoe was rested on the car bumper in a manner "consistent with someone lifting a body in or out of the boot".

But a source at the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham, which is helping Portuguese police, said they had not even tested the bumper of the car - which is in Portugal - "so they have not had anything to match with any other prints".
